Image shows four people laboring up a slope (two are bent over) and all linked together by rope. Levon West, 1900-1968, was an etcher, watercolorist and photographer (under the name of Ivan Dimitri). His work is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, New York Public Library, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian and the Delaware Museum of Art which has the same print entitled "Mountain Climbers". LIMITED TO 100 COPIES, THIS IS #39 AND SIGNED BY LEVON WEST AND DATED "1928". Attractive.

Levon West (1900-1968), noted American etcher, specialized in sporting and Western scenes. He was born in Centerville, South Dakota, where his father was minister of the Congregational Church, and attended the University of Minnesota where, though majoring in business, he studied art in a random fashion. Headed for the Graduate Business School at Harvard in 1925, he stopped in New York and visited the Art Student's League where he met Joseph Pennell, who "turned him away from Harvard, away from business, into the precarious conditions of an etcher's career." He studied with Pennell, and at the time of this catalogue's publication, when he was only 30, he had created over a hundred plates of uncommon merit. A beautifully designed and produced catalogue, with typography by Frederic Warde, printed on handmade deckle-edge paper, the etchings fully described and superbly reproduced. Born in South Dakota, Levon West (1900-68) was a precociously talented artist who abandoned a Harvard business education to become an etcher. West learned his craft from the eminent artist and draughtsman Joseph Pennell, and gained overnight success when the New York Times published his etching of Charles Lindburgh's airplane, the Spirit of St. Louis, the day after its successful transatlantic flight. The present work was published when the artist was just 30 years old and includes etchings of his time in Spain, portraits, wonderful images of the American West, and sailboats, as well as the image that made him famous.
