"As Rolleston points out, case histories with clinical manifestations, but without the proof of a necropsy, can be found dotted about in the older medical journals, usually among the collections of monstrosities as 'curiosities of precocious puberty'. In boys, cortical hyperplasia seems much rarer. Some of them were reported as the 'infant Hercules' type. L. Guthrie and W. Emery suggested that the legends about young Hercules and Samson had their origin from the observation of such patients; but records of such cases have existed since antiquity. According to Pliny, the son of one Enthymenes of Salamis was 4j feet tall when aged 3 and developed puberty. Krateros, the brother of King Antigonos, "in seven years passed through Shakespeare's seven stages". He died at the age of seven. Charles Charlesworth was 4 feet 7 inches tall in 1734, when aged five, and weighed 87 lbs. and had every sign of puberty, a hairy body and worked with his father as a carrier; he died aged seven. C. J. Geoffroy (1685-1752), membre de l'Academie des Sciences de Paris, reported in 1742 on a 'monstrous boy', aged 3 years and 2 months, whose size and strength made him a 'Prodigy of virility', with pubic hair, erectile penis (6 inches long), and there were a number of patients described as monstrosities." V.C. Medvei, A History of Endocrinology (1982), p.240 Leonard George Guthrie FRCP (7 February 1858 - 24 December 1918) was senior physician and paediatrician to the Paddington Green Children's Hospital in London and was also associated with the Hospital for Epilepsy and Paralysis in Maida Vale, London.
