DJ is toned and scuffed with numerous chips and tears present, spine is darkened and has a black mark below the author's name. Red cloth boards underneath are clean and bright with only issues being some light spotting and edge and corner bumps/wear. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. Pages are toned due to age and there is some very minor foxing/spotting which is mainly limited to the end pages. Front end page contains original owners name in the 1926 Christmas inscription as well as faint evidence of a price once penciled in the corner. No other handwriting found, no bookplates, no library markings. Copyright page shows the original 1921 Sprague Publishing date as well as the 1924 Grosset and Dunlap. The Sprague Publishing date was when this story was published in magazine format, the 1924 G&D date signifies the first edition in book form. The only other issue found in the book is on the last advertising page and rear book which is missing a large section in the lower outside corner. This missing corner is outside of the text areas but is the reason for the lower condition grade. Otherwise the book would grade as VG to VG plus.

The front board is faded except along the bottom end, has a 3/8 in. stain, and two bumpy lines that appear to be weaving flaws in the cloth. Nearly half of the back board is darkened by a water stain. The text block ends have darkened. The front endpaper is split over the hinge, has two 1/4 in. stains, one of which is at the beginning of the inscribee's name. The front margins of the frontispiece and frontal matter (Our Chatter Box) have water stain, some of which is pink. The first 14 pages have less water stain on the front margins. The top corners of 60 pages and one plate have light water stain, 4 of those pages have water stain on the top margins, and two have waterstain crossing the top 7 lines of text. Zustand: GOOD. First or early edition. The 11 book Poppy Ott series was an offshoot of the author's very popular Jerry Todd series, featuring one of Jerry's buddies. However, in contrast to Jerry's middle class upbringing, Poppy is first introduced as a boy tramp, compelled to wander around the country by his shiftless father, but he soon shows his worth - and thus earned his own series. In creating the character of Poppy Ott, Edwards was drawing on both his poverty-ridden youth and innate business acumen to express his philosophy of getting ahead in life. Poppy is depicted as a very likable but real go-getter, dreaming up money-making projects and organizing them. Illustrated by Bert Salg with a glossy frontispiece and three internal plates, 238 pp. plus 10 pp of publisher's ads. Lists to #4 in this series in the back.
