Rebacked in quarter c…loth, with marble boards. Calf decorative spine visible beneath cloth. Contemporary end papers, with a missing title leaf. From the publishing partnership between James Harrison and Samuel Brooke, the Novelist's Magazine was a popular series offering readers literary classics enjoy, spanning twenty-three volumes between 1780-1788. This particular volume is special compared to others for the works within them happening to be very scarce, with no insittutional copies of Lenox's satire other than that seen in this magazine. - The Female Quixote; or the Adventures of Arabela, by Mrs. Lenox, or Charlotte Lenox. Eight books, originally bound in two volumes. Contains all four plates, with plate III bound after plate IV. Collated complete (1783, first published in 1752).- A Journey from this World to the Next, by Henry Fielding. Very scarce. Contains all three plates. Collated complete (1783, first published in 1749).- The Life and Adventures of Joe Thompson: A Narrative Founded on Fact, by Edward Kimber. Originally bound in two volumes. Very scarce. Contains all four plates. Collated complete (1783, first published in 1750).- The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins, A Cornish Man: Taken from his own Mouth, in his Passage to England, from off Cape Horn in America, in the Ship Hector, by R.S., a Passenger in the Hector. Contains all six plates. Collated complete (1783, first published 1751). Rebacked in quarter cloth, with marble boards. Calf decorative spine visible beneath cloth. Contemporary end papers, with a missing title leaf. Externally, browning to cloth joints with loss to cloth spine, with cracked calf decorative spine visible beneath. Cracking to front joint, with rubbing to edges. Minor loss to marble board extremities. Cloth reinforcement to front end paper hinge, with the odd spot to end papers. Internally, mostly firmly bound, with hinges pp.14-15 of Thompson and pp.176-177 starting. The odd small crease to extremities of final leaves. Octavo (23cm); royal blue cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt on front cover; marbled endpapers; [2],x,69,[3]pp, with a portrait of Lenox, one map, and illustrations throughout on coated paper. Generically inscribed by the author on a preliminary blank: "From D.H. Lenox / Phoenix Ariz / Jan 18, 191…4." Light wear to extremities, some softening to spine ends and corners, and a tiny stain to lower front joint; contents fresh; Near Fine. Lenox's privvately printed history of the first considerable emigration across the unknown West, which he participated in as a youth of 16. While the title page states "Limited Edition Autograph Copy," there is no statement of limitation in any copy we have seen in commerce. Based on auction records, it seems Lenox signed copies fairly infrequently, with the last few appearing in 1958 (Parke Bernet, Bauer). HOWES L255a; GRAFF 2454.
