Deighton's essay dwells on the universal appeal of the Sherlock Holmes adventures, but also on the contributions that Doyle made beyond the realms of literature - for instance his assistance in designing the naval life jacket used in World War I. A curious bit of writing linking two great maters of the thriller genre. Signed.
