The USAsupported the Congolese Government directly whilealso supporting the UN initiatives in the Congo.This necessitated some covert operations by the CIAwhen the above objectives conflicted. The attemptsin 1962 to provide the Congo with air supportagainst Katanga was a prime example of Washingtonhedging its bets by pursuing several parallelsolutions. One of these tracks involved having theCIA set up an air unit with old trainer aircraftobtained from Belgian stocks and piloted by Cubanveterans from the Bay of Pigs. This account, whichis based on extensive archival research andinterviews, chronicles the political events anddecisions in the Congo and Washington that led tothe involvement of the CIA. It also describes thepractical steps needed to actually create the airunit.
