In den WarenkorbFolio. Original publisher's dark ivory wrappers printed in black. [2] (title, contents), 3-103 pp. + 1f. (errata) laid in. Wrappers browned and with small edge chips and tears; titling in black marker to spine. Browned. Later issue. Friederike, to a libretto by Ludwig Herzer and Fritz Löhner, was first performed in Berlin at the Metropol on October 4, 1928 (often incorrectly cited as October 10). As an opera about the young Goethe and his love affair with Friederike Brion, Friederike attracted a great deal of attention and caused quite the scandal in Berlin. This was further inflamed by the impresario brothers Alfred and Fritz Rotter, who provided their Metropol Theatre and capitalized on the increased attention. The premiere featured Richard Tauber as Goethe and Käthe Dorsch as Friederike; it was attended by the leading figures and nobility of Germany. While critics lambasted it with extreme vitriol, the public was enthralled, and the popularity of Friederike spread throughout Germany and Europe. A cloud seemed to hang over the work and its creators, however: the Nazis banned it upon gaining power, Herzer died shortly after fleeing to Switzerland, Löhner was killed at Auschwitz, and a botched kidnapping attempt by the Gestapo left Alfred Rotter and his wife dead. Several melodies remained well-known through recordings of Tauber, but only recently has Friederike been recorded in its entirety, allowing for renewed appraisal and appreciation.

A slightly revised version opened in Vienna, Theater an der Wien, 21 December 1931. "[Lehár] was the leading operetta composer of the 20th century, being primarily responsible for giving the genre renewed vitality. His most successful operetta, Die lustige Witwe, has established a lasting place in the opera as well as the operetta repertory and, along with Offenbach and Johann Strauss II, Lehár has remained one of the most popular composers of light music." [4] (title, cast list, contents, facsimile playbill from the Vienna premiere on January 20, 1934), 5-165, [1] (blank) pp. Distributor's handstamp to upper and title. Lehár's operetta Giuditta, composed to a libretto by Paul Knepler and Fritz Löhner, premiered in Vienna at the Staatsoper on January 20, 1934. After a pause of nearly 5 years, Lehár wrote what would be his last operetta: Giuditta. Staring Richard Tauber and Jarmila Novotna, the work was well-received by audiences, but lambasted by the critics. Yet Lehár considered it above the rest of his oeuvre, stating: "Giuditta is my favorite child; I have been able to put into it something created from my innermost being. With it I have given of my best." Quoted in Grun: Gold and Silver, p. 246.

In den WarenkorbFolio. Original publisher's gray printed wrappers. [2] (title, cast list, contents), 3-108 pp. Handstamp of Waldheim-Eberle to upper along with date stamp of July 8, 1950. Wrappers lightly foxed at edges. First Edition of the revised version, later issue. Lehár's operetta A pacsirta, composed to a libretto by Ferenc Martos after the Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer's play Dorf und Stadt (1847)m was first performed in Budapest at the Király Theatre on January 1, 1918. The German version by A. M. Willner and Heinz Reichert was premiered in Vienna at the Theater am Wien on March 27, 1918. It was later revised into a four-scene version published in 1937. "The folkloristic part of the music is anything but stereotyped; the waltzes, fifteen in number, are without exception of striking originality. Where the Hungarian element in Zigeunerliebe was all fire and passion, in die Lerche it became idyllic and tender. The score shows, too, a clear step towards the great transformation: Lehár's change from the dizzy heights of Endlich allein, with its unclimbed summit, to the bucolic landscape of his late works: the definite recognition of an aim which carries with it the promise of magnificent fulfilment." Grun: Gold and Silver, p. 178.

(publisher's catalogs and advertisements). Binding slightly worn and bumped. Minor internal wear and soiling; upper margins of many leaves cockled. First English Edition. Lehár's operetta Zigeunerliebe was composed to a libretto by A. M. Willner and Robert Bodanzky. It was first performed at the Carltheater in Vienna on January 8, 1910. The English version by Basil Hood and Adrian Ross premiered in New York at the Globe Theatre on October 17, 1911. "With [Zigeunerliebe] he brought out the full Magyar side of his musical nature: his melodies sounded like old folk-songs, and breathed like sad, beautiful fairy-tales the great melancholy of the Hungarian countryside." Grun: Gold and Silver, p. 161. "[Lehár] was the leading operetta composer of the 20th century, being primarily responsible for giving the genre renewed vitality.
