A scarce early Estienne university textbook on Aristotelian ethics from the circle of Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples, containing Beatus Rhenanus' earliest recorded original printed contribution. This revised and enlarged edition of Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples' (c. 1455-1536) Artificialis introductio presents the leading French humanist's concise introduction to Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, prepared for university instruction. First published in 1502, the work occupies an important place in the history of printing, as that edition was the earliest surviving book to bear the name of Henri Estienne I in its imprint, inaugurating the long collaboration between Lefèvre and the Estienne press. Between 1502 and 1511, more than half of Henri Estienne's editions were devoted to Lefèvre's educational programme. The present edition includes the commentary of Josse Clichtove (1472-1543), Lefèvre's pupil and principal collaborator. The edition contains what appears to be Beatus Rhenanus' (1485-1547) earliest recorded original printed contribution: his signed address to the reader, Beatus Rhenanus lectori bene agere, introducing the work in two elegiac distichs. According to the bibliographies of Horawitz and Knod, Rhenanus' only earlier recorded appearance in print was as one of the scholars participating in the recognitio of Lefèvre's Contenta (1505). Produced during the formative years of the collaboration between Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples and the Estienne press, the volume exemplifies the new generation of Parisian university textbooks that combined concise exposition with learned commentary for the teaching of Aristotelian philosophy. The present copy preserves contemporary scholarly annotations, documenting its early academic use. The edition is also scarce on the market: RBH records only a single copy offered at auction during the past century, appearing in a sammelband of four early Aristotelian works by Lefèvre (Sotheby's, 1995). . The first printed edition of the Paradysus Heraclidis, edited by Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples and published as part of his programme to recover the literature of the primitive Church. Edited by the French humanist Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples (c. 1455-1536), the present volume is the first printed edition of the Paradysus Heraclidis, issued together with the Recognitiones Petri apostoli, the Epistle of Clement, the Complementum epistolae Clementis, and the Epistle of Anacletus. In his dedicatory epistle, Lefèvre explains that he rescued these neglected texts from ancient libraries for the benefit of contemporary readers, believing them to preserve both genuine Christian doctrine and the history of the primitive Church. At its centre is the Paradysus Heraclidis, a Latin recension of Palladius' Historia Lausiaca and one of the principal sources for the history of early Egyptian monasticism. Rejecting the Lives of the Fathers traditionally attributed to Jerome as corrupt, Lefèvre presented the Paradysus as a more faithful account of the Desert Fathers, accompanying it with the Recognitiones Petri and the Epistles of Clement and Anacletus, which he believed preserved authentic apostolic teaching but are now recognised as belonging to the Pseudo-Clementine tradition. One of the leading French Renaissance humanists, Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples is best known for his influential editions and commentaries on Aristotle, which established his reputation as a scholar. Alongside his classical studies, he applied the methods of Renaissance philology to patristic and early Christian literature, seeking to recover texts that he regarded as authentic witnesses to the primitive Church. The present edition ranks among the earliest and most significant expressions of that aspect of his scholarship. Extremely scarce Cologne edition of Lefèvre's Epitome and other mathematical treatises, the first edition of this combination of texts. Includes Bovelles' Epitome rerum geometricarum, regarded as the earliest study on geometry by a French writer. The collection contains the French humanist and theologian Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples' (c. 1455-1536) introduction to the arithmetic of Boethius and Jordanus Nemorarius, together with mathematical texts by members of his circle. These include Josse van Clichtove's (1472-1543) Ars supputandi, a practical introduction to calculation with counters and written numerals; a geometrical prologue by Johannes Caesarius (1468-1550); and Charles de Bovelles' (c. 1475-1566) Epitome rerum geometricarum, which is regarded as the earliest study on geometry by a French writer. The volume also contains a discussion of numerical progression drawn from Augustine, the De quadratura circuli demonstratio attributed to Campanus, as well as poems by the German humanist Hermann von dem Busche (1468-1534) and Caesarius. Caesarius was also responsible for the dedication to Heinrich Einhorn (Monoceros). A differently constituted collection of texts was published in Paris in 1503 (Epitome compendiosaque introductio in libros arithmeticos divi Severini Boetii [.], Wolfgang Hopyl and Henri Estienne) and is generally regarded as the first edition of the present work. The 1507 Cologne publication, however, differs sufficiently in its contents and arrangement that it is better regarded as a distinct edition and collection rather than simply as a second edition of the 1503 book. The absence of a colophon has led to conflicting bibliographical attributions. The edition has also been described as Paris (Smith) and Deventer (Oosterhoff, 2018). Despite extensive research, we have been unable to locate copies bearing either a Paris or Deventer imprint, and believe that these attributions may represent bibliographical ghosts rather than separately printed editions. The absence of a colophon has led to conflicting bibliographical attributions. The edition has also been assigned to Paris (Smith) and Deventer (Oosterhoff, 2018) as places of printing. The first work contains the introduction to the Politica by Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples, with commentary of Josse Clichtove, and the translation of the Oeconomicon Xenophontis by Raphael Volaterranus (i.e., Raffaele Maffei). The second works contains the Latin translation of the Politica by Leonardo Bruni Aretino, with commentary by Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples (first published by Henri Estienne in 1506). The Hecatonomiae by Lefèvre d'Etaples is based on Plato's Respublica and Leges. The Oeconomiae publicae is the title given by Lefèvre d'Etaples to what is sometimes called the third book of the Oeconomica. This collection was first published by Estienne in 1506. Colines's "Artistotles" border represents six classical philosophers: Aristotle and Pythagoras in the upper portion, flanking the arms of the University of Paris, on the left side Socrates and Cicero, on the right Plato and Seneca, and in the lower portion a variation of Colines's "Cuniculi" device. Corners slightly bumped and capitals worn, especially the lower one, where the capital band is showing and has loosened a bit. Inner hinge slightly weak. Front free end-paper with 18th century ink-annotation (title, year, etc.). A very light damp stain top the last portion of leaves, a bit heavier to the last two leaves. Otherwise internally very nice and clean. All in all a very nice copy, with only very light scattered brownspotting. Beautifully printed in two columns and in red and black throughout. Pp. 233-294. Second edition (following the original of 1509) of the final two parts of Estienne's typographic masterpiece "Quincuplex Psalterium", also known as the "First book of French Protestantism". These two final parts, which make up complete works in themselves, consist in the "Psalterium Vetus" - the Old Latin Psalter (i.e. the version used by the churches before Jerome's revisions) and the "Psaltarium Conciliatum", consisting in Lefevre's own version, based on the Vulgate text corrected according to the Hebrew text and using the Aristarchian signs. This spledid publication had an immense impact upon protestantism, early bible-scholarship, and theology in general and is famed because of its beauty, elegance, and typographical excellence along with its immense importance historically speaking. "Lefèvre's epoch-making work was awaited impatiently by the learned world, and is the topic of many a letter among the extant humanist correspondence of the period: thus, Cardinal Ximeèz, the future editor of the first polyglot Bible, in a letter to Charles de Bovelles, praises Lefèvre's scholarship and the usefulness of his "Psalterium". This famous volume is also Henri Estienne's typographical masterpiece and is commonly singled out as one of the outstanding monuments of early 16th-century French typography." (Schreiber).
