Two of the greatest Dutch jurists of their day, Van Leeuwen and Vinnius were perhaps the most widely read Dutch jurists during the late-seventeenth and eighteenth century. De Origine is a collection of annotated excerpts from the Corpus Juris Civilis and essays. The first essay, "De Origine Juris" is by Vinnius. Van Leeuwen compiled the excerpts and wrote two of the essay. Both authors provide annotations and cite additional annotations from other authors. It was first published in 1671, its third and final edition in 1762. Arnhem is a city and municipality in the eastern part of the Netherlands that was established around 900. It was granted city rights in 1233 and joined the Hanseatic League in 1443. It became part of the United Provinces of the Netherlands (Dutch Republic) in 1585. Van Leeuwen was a Dutch attorney active in the Hague and Leiden who became the assistant registrar of the Supreme Court at the Hague in 1681. His reputation derives from his studies Paratitula Iuris Novissimi (1652), Het Rooms-Hollands-Regt (1664) and the present work. First published in 1662, it is an important study of Roman law and old Dutch law with an emphasis on practical use. It was published soon after Holland achieved its independence from Spain. During this period, Dutch law was a complicated mixture of local and Spanish sources, which often conflicted. In this work, van Leeuwen restated Dutch law by removing Spanish elements and grounding it on principles derived from Roman law. It also has interesting comparisons between Dutch law, Roman law and the laws of other nations. Though never highly regarded in Holland, this work was translated into the principal European languages and issued in numerous editions during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was especially influential in South Africa, where it was cited extensively and given a statutory place as a subsidiary authority in the South African Republic.

Third edition, revised and enlarged, of a rare practical handbook for practicing notaries, written by Simon van Leeuwen (1626-1682), the most famous Dutch lawyer of the 17th century after Hugo de Groot (Grotius). It incorporates a dictionary of more than 4000 technical terms, many borrowed or adapted from Latin, giving simple definitions in common Dutch. Unlike the second edition, the present third edition explicitly notes that it has been newly revised, improved and expanded. It teaches all theoretical and practical knowledge needed in a notary's office, presented in the form of questions and answers, like a catechism, but sometimes also citing sources. Van Leeuwen's approach is refreshingly anti-bureaucratic.From the library of Eeltjo van Beresteyn (1876-1948). With a 1770 owner's inscription, some underlining and an occasional pencilled note. He was a prolific author; several of his works were standard texts. Verhandelinghe van Handt-Opleggen ende Besetten is a comprehensive treatise on arrest and seizure of property. First published in Latin in 1654 as De Iure Sistendi, it went through several Latin editions into the seventeenth century and was one of the titles included in the Tractatus Universi Juris (1584-1586), the multi-volume anthology of key contemporary legal works edited by Francesco Ziletti under the patronage of Pope Gregory XIII. The translation edited by Van Leeuwen, possibly the most widely read Dutch jurist of the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, expanded its audience. First published in 1653, it went through seven subsequent editions, the last one in 1784. The Van Leeuwen editions are scarce.
