Final script for the 1940 film. The AFI Catalog notes: "According to a Twentieth Century- Fox press release, this was the first writing effort for Fox sound man William Brent. After his story was bought, Brent was made a writer at the studio. [Also the first screenwriter assignment for] Irving Cummings, Jr. and William Conselman, Jr. Both men were "second generation Hollywood," as Cummings' father was a director and Conselman's a screenwriter. "According to Twentieth Century-Fox press releases, the football sequences were shot at the Los Angeles Olympic Stadium and at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. Despite a summer heat wave, the extras were required to wear heavy winter coats. As such, large wind machines behind huge cakes of ice were used to cool off the fields. Thirty-four college football players from local universities were used as extras in this film. They included USC's Ambrose Schindler, Bill Howard, Red Morgan, Tony Tonelli, Ollie Day and Owen Hansen, and UCLA's Billy Bob Williams, Bill Overlin and Bill Radovich. Location filming was done at the Inglewood Railway Station as the station received little use. Because only two freight trains used the station each day, movie extras were the only passengers ever to use the station. The press release also reported that the rental cost of a four-car train at the station was $150 per day. HR reported that Fox borrowed Lewis Howard from Universal Pictures for this film." A Fox programmer about a doctor reflecting on his college days, how he was lured onto the football team and away from his studies, a flirtation with a widow and meeting his true love. A strong early vehicle for actor Robert Sterling, and featuring two notable women from the serial film era, Jean Rogers, Pale blue titled wrappers, noted as FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 149 and production No. 518, dated June 24, 1940. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page present, dated June 24, 1940, noted as Final Script, with credits for screenwriters Conselman Jr. and Cummings Jr. 135 leaves, mimeograph duplication, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 6/25/40 and 7/1/40. Addressed, with Chester postmark, on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Bill | Boar Lane | Leeds | Yorkshire'. ('Bill Thomas, 7, Boar lane' is listed among the 'Glass, China, and Earthenware Dealers' in Haigh's 'General and Commercial Directory of the Borough of Leeds', Baines & Co., 1839). The reverse of the second leaf also carries the remains of the wax seal, stamped 'Ann'. In fair condition, on worn and aged paper. The letter is addressed to 'My dear Mother', with the valediction 'Bessy joins me in kind love to you Thomas & Matilda and believe me Mother your | affectionate daughter | Ann Bill'. Having 'arrived safe in Chester', she begins by describing the 'very delightful ride': 'we had a full load from Bradford all the way to Manchester and could have got many more we took up 2 Ladies & Gentlemen at Armley Mrs. the Gent upon the Bar scarcely spoke a word all the way | We took up Mr. Norris at Halifax he sat next me and was very kind in pointing out every thing worth noting the finest views though [sic] Todmorden he said were equal to Italion [sic] Scenery he also pointed out different parts of the Railway. They go out and see Chester, and stop by 'the Feathers Inn where the Coach runs too'. She gives news of family friends ('Mrs. C.' and the Booth family), and describes her activities in the city ('a very singular built town'), including a visit to 'the Cathedral and the New Bridge over the Dee'. She is much impressed by the Marquess of Westminster's Eaton Hall: 'You could not conceive a more splendid place [.] the gardens were very beautiful and very extensive they employ 50 Gardeners the grounds are 52 acres we got in to the Maqrquises [sic] State Carriage we did not see the Horses we saw the Marquis in the park he moved very politely to us afterwards we met the Marchioness driving a pair of grey ponys [sic] - she nodded very familiarly to us the[y] seem very plain affable people'. In den WarenkorbSix items from the Rothermere papers, on disparate subjects, casting light on the workings of 1930s Fleet Street. In good condition, lightly aged. The six are described below in chronological order. ONE: Typed Copy of letter, '(sgd) ROTHERMERE', to Donald. Hotel Splendide, 105 Piccadilly, W.1. 12 November 1929. 1p., 4to. The letter begins: 'My dear Donald, | I quite understand all the peculiar difficulties with which you are surrounded in connection with the Anglo-Foreign Newspapers Ltd. | As you are a director, and are going to be made chairman, I wish to help you in every possible way.' He describes a share option he is willing to make, and concludes: 'I am a large shareholder in Anglo-Foreign Newspapers Limited, and this is in consideration of your remaining a director of the Company.' TWO: Typed Letter Signed from Ernest Outhwaite (director of the Leeds Mercury and described by Richard Bourne as 'a director and factotum of Rothermere') to 'Sir Robert'. On letterhead of La Dragonniere, Cap Martin, A.M. 8 April 1930. 1p., 4to. He quotes a long telegram he sent him regarding offers by Rothermere regarding 'Camrose' and the Newcastle Evening World, Newcastle Chronicle, Bristol Evening World, 'Bristol paper' and 'Derby paper'. He asks him to acknowledge receipt and 'pass on the suggestion'. THREE: Typed Copy of letter, 'signed) Rothermere', to Donald. Hotel Splendide. 3 June 1930. 1p., 4to. Requesting him to 'obtain from Lloyds Bank detailed particulars of the Hull and Grimsby Newspaper Company'. FOUR: Typed Copy of letter from the libertarian publisher Ernest J. Benn (1875-1954) to 'The Rt. Hon. the Viscount Rothermere, | The Daily Mail, | London.' Bouverie House, Fleet Street, E.C.4. 30 June 1930. The letter begins: 'Dear Lord Rothermere, | There can be no doubt as to the gravity of the coming economic crisis. For my own part I prefer those sections of your programme which deal with economy and freedom rather than this protective business whatever it may be called. | I was evidently wrong. I credited you with the controlling voice in Anglo Foreign Newspapers and through them Industrial Newspapers, and have thus looked upon you as to some extent responsible for a troup [sic] of publications that I would be very glad to have.' FIVE: Carbon copy of Typed Letter [from Rothermere] to unnamed recipient. 4 December 1930. 1p., 4to. Giving the conditions for granting 'an option on Forty Thousand Ordinary Shares in Northcliffe Newspapers Limited'. SIX: Typed Letter Signed from 'Robert Donald' to 'The Hon. Esmond Harmsworth, | Northcliffe House, E.C.4.' On letterhead of 12 Thorney Street, Palace Gate, W.8. 24 March 1932. 1p., 4to. With a few autograph corrections. He begins with the wish that Harmsworth has 'returned quite recovered' from his recent illness. 'I have had several talks with Sutton regarding the "Dispatch". I am quite ready to begin the Causerie which we have discussed. I would not like it to be confined to politics. I am quite sure I can get exclusive political news when it is going, but it is not always available. In any case a gossipy newsy Causerie should be more comprehensive. At the same time, of course, I would not deal with social or society matters.'.
