Notre exemplaire est présenté broché sous couvertures muettes d'attente. Dos légèrement fendillés, quelques rousseurs. Le premier volume est illustré de 4 planches hors-texte (dont une en frontispice et un plan dépliant) ainsi que de 5 tableaux dépliants ; le second de 2 planches gravées, d'1 tableau dépliant, et, en fin de volume, d'un grand plan dépliant hors-texte. Ce titre très rare forme le développement d'un opuscule paru dès 1814 (Moscou avant et après l'incendie) et mettant l'accent surtout sur l'incendie de Moscou de 1812 (pour lequel il constitue d'ailleurs un témoignage direct). Dans notre édition, ce mauvais souvenir a disparu pour laisser entièrement la place à la description des monuments et institutions de la ville. Lecointe de Laveau (1783-1846), fixé en Russie depuis au moins 1806 (date à laquelle il se maria sur place), était secrétaire de la Société impériale des naturalistes de Moscou ; il voyagea pas mal dans l'Empire et ne revint en France qu'après 1830 | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Second edition, in large part original as it is substantially enlarged (Tulard, 876, for the editions of 1814 and 1818). Our copy remains sewn in the original plain temporary wrappers. Backstrips slightly split, a few scattered spots of foxing. The first volume is illustrated with 4 plates outside the text (including a frontispiece and a folding plan), together with 5 folding tables; the second with 2 engraved plates, one folding table, and, at the end of the volume, a further large folding plan. This very scarce work expands upon a pamphlet first issued in 1814 (Moscou avant et après l'incendie), devoted chiefly to the burning of Moscow in 1812, of which it offers a first-hand account. In the present edition, that painful recollection has disappeared, giving way entirely to a description of the city's monuments and institutions. The first edition of a detailed guide to Moscow, illustrated with finely lithographed plates.Lecointe de Laveau, a French entomologist, was secretary of the Imperial Society of Naturalists of Moscow and had a first-hand knowledge of the city. In 12 chapters he describes Moscow's history, topography, commerce, monuments, and institutions, with (folding) tables providing valuable statistic data. The seventh chapter contains details on public and private art collections and libraries, including the library of Prince Michel Galitzin, who owned a Gutenberg Bible ("Bible de Mayence").Lacks half-title.
