No Binding. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Original hand-coloured lithograph from John Gould's monumental large-folio Birds of Europe. London, (1832-1837). A beautiful original nineteenth-century hand-coloured lithograph depicting the White Crane (Grus leucogeranus, Temm.) standing amongst reeds beside a rocky shoreline. Drawn and…lithographed by Edward Lear, one of the greatest ornithological artists of the nineteenth century, and still only around twenty years old when Gould first commissioned him for his monumental natural history publications. The composition is distinguished by the extraordinary elegance of the bird's elongated neck and finely observed white plumage, rendered with remarkable subtlety and restraint. Lear's mastery is particularly evident in the delicate tonal modelling of the feathers and the graceful upward sweep of the crane's pose, while the vivid yellow facial markings and red eye provide a striking focal contrast within the otherwise restrained palette. Printed by Hullmandel. Sheet size approximately 53 x 36.5 cm. Condition: Good with original hand-colouring. Old framer's tabs verso. Age toning to the margins which would be covered by a mount along with the filing holes to the left margin. Includes some age-spotting, slight fading, creasing and minor handling wear to margins consistent with age. A rare and important Edward Lear lithograph in good, unrestored condition.

Hand-coloured lithographed plate, heightened with gum arabic; framed and glazed, overall dimensions: 453 mm x 614 mm x 40 mm. Edward Lear is one of the greatest ornithological artists of all time. His contributions to John Gould's work Birds of Europe included the most eye-catching subjects in the book:, cranes, pelicans, swans,… and flamingos. Lear's plates are from bird drawings that 'are certainly among the most remarkable bird drawings ever made, [for] it is evident that Lear endowed them with some measure of his own whimsy and intelligence, his energetic curiosity, his self-conscious clumsiness and his unselfconscious charm' (Hyman). 'He introduced a sense of subtlety and freedom into her drawings where previously she had only mimicked the technique used in etching or engraving. There is no doubt that Edward Lear was the first person to understand the art of lithography and to use it to its fullest potential. It was a legacy that made the works of Gould into a success and took them into the forefront of nineteenth-century illustration' (Tree). Anker 169; Fine Bird Books, p.77; Nissen IVB 371; Sauer 2; Wood, p.364; Zimmer, p.251.
