Nice-looking, structurally sound exemplar of the First Edition, augmented with 52 colored (and titled and captioned, with tissue-guards) and 90 black-and-white illustrations and wit…h an additional eight pages of advertising. Recently rebound by Joseph Ziemba in blue book cloth with title from original edition laid on front board. Covering is lightly soiled, label is a bit faded. New endpapers added, gutters reinforced, top edges gilt, else text is clean and unmarked. The color illustrations include "Off to the Village", with frontispiece, title page, imprint, dedication, poems, then a "KG" (a facsimile letter from Austin Dobson, 1902), then a four-page Preface, Table of Contents (another four pages), four-page List of Illustrations. Inside front flap is bookplate designed by Greenaway of "From the Books of Mabel Eastman-Dixon," on which is printed "YEAR OF OUR LORD NINETEEN HUNDRED & SEVENTEEN," removed from original binding. The Kate Greenaway Medal, named after the beloved children's book illustrator, has recently been embroiled in controversy because her name was removed and replaced with that of Andrew Carnegie. The medal was first established in 1955, given annually by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information (CILIP) Professionals.
