The presentation slip could possibly be written by the author William Lawrence, but the hand writing could not be verified. "Lectures on Physiology, Zoology, and the Natural History of Man" is an influential early 19th-century scientific work by William Lawrence (1783-1867), a prominent English surgeon and professor of anatomy. First published in 1819, the book became controversial for challenging prevailing religious doctrines about the soul and human origins. Its materialist implications led to public criticism and temporary suppression of the publication. In 1822 the radical political publisher William Benbow issued a pirated edition, which became incredibly influential. Charles Darwin cited the edition five times in The Descent of Man. Mary Shelley was interested in William Lawrence's and John Abernethy's debates about the nature of life, and used the political and scientific terms of that disagreement to shape Frankenstein and her 1831 revisions of it. 1409144. See the the Duke's entry, and Eastlake's, in the Oxford DNB, as well as James Lees-Milne's biography 'The Bachelor Duke' (1991). With regard to the subject of the letters (now at Chatsworth), Eastlake's obituary in the… Illustrated London News states: 'A more important effort was a large composition, commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire, the subject of which was derived from Plutarch's story of the Spartan Isadas appearing in a battle armed but undraped, and being in consequence taken for a god; the exhibition of which picture, in 1827, procured the artist's election an Associate of the Academy.' Both items have strips of minor discoloration, otherwise they are in good condition, lightly aged and with postage folds. Both signed 'Devonshire.' Eastlake is not named as the recipient of the first letter, but given the context his identity is apparent. ONE: 7 October 1827; Chatsworth. 2pp, 12mo. On first leaf of bifolium. The letter suggests that Eastlake has been paid twice. Begins: 'Dear Sir / I am surprized & embarrassed by the letter I have today received from you, and I can only account for my bankers conduct by my having employed a secretary at the very busy time of last spring, who may have sent another order for 250£, I having forgot having done so myself. / I have written to Messieurs Snow for an explanation of this & they will give information to Messieurs Harman. / Sir Thomas Lawrence who is here is going to repair a slight injury done to the picture on the journey. I have hung it in a very good though temporary place, & I admire it more every day'. In 1837 the author of 'Modern Chatsworth; or, The Palace of the Peak' reported that the painting had recently been removed from the state drawing room at Chatsworth to the banqueting hall. TWO: 25 July 1852; Brighton. 1p, 4to. Written (for reasons explained in the text) in a very shaky hand. Eastlake would clearly like to retouch his painting, but the Duke is not inclined to let him. Reads: 'Dear Sir Charles / I should be willing to comply with a request of yours, but I do not like to remove Isadas [sic] from the position where he is seen and admired by thousands every year. He will 'call at the College in the course of the day & affix my signature to the completed document'. Until 1856, when he became Superintendent of the Natural History Department of the British Museum, Owen was conservator and Hunterian professor in the Royal College of Surgeons. From the distinguished autograph collection of Richard Hunter, son of Ida Macalpine, whose collection of 7000 books relating to psychiatry is in Cambridge University Library. Macalpine and Hunter had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

The right-hand column, headed 'Picture Exhibition', carr…ies Alma-Tadema's responses, some of which are written in darker ink than others, indicating that they were added at more than one point. Alongside 'Paris (EU) 1867' he writes '13 pictures amongst them. the Education of the Children of Clovis, the two above An entrance to a Roman theatre, armuror's [sic] shop. Agrippina visiting the ashes of Germanius, Egyptian game'. For 'Vienna 1893' and 'Melbourne 1880' he writes 'don't remember'. The last entry, for 'Royal Scottish Academy: | ? date', reads: 'A medal of Honorary Membership given on the occasion of my election to that honour. 1877.' While Roberts does not appear to have written on Alma-Tadema directly, he was a voluminous author who, at the time of writing, had just completed a two-volume work on the London auctioneers Christie's (1897). At one time simply sewn, sewing no longer present. This is a remarkable, unpublished, critique of William Lawrence's controversial Lectures published in 1816 which, toget…her with his Natural History of Man, 1819 created 'the first scientific issue that widely seized the public imagination in Britain, a premonition of the debate over Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection exactly forty years later'. William Lawrence, 1783-1867, had a long and distinguished career as a surgeon specialising in opthalmology after his initial five years as apprentice to John Abernethy, 1764-1831, and was knighted by Queen Victoria just before his death. Percy and Mary Shelley consulted him from 1814 - and it has been suggested that Lawrence's argument in favour of materialism against Abernethy's support for 'vitalism' may have inspired Frankenstein. For Lawrence, mental processes were a function of the brain, while Abernethy argued that thoughts were the product of 'vital acts of an immaterial kind'. His radicalism, which allied him in the public mind with Paine, Byron, Carlile and Hone, led to the Lord Chancellor ruling that Lawrence's Lectures contradicted the Bible and were therefore blasphemous; to avoid prosecution they were withdrawn by the author, and 'never again did he venture to express his views on the process of evolution'. He did later warn Thomas Huxley ('Darwin's Bulldog') not to publicly support the theory. Darwin, in his 1838 notebook, does refers to Lawrence's Lectures, but his role in the 'evolution of the theory of evolution' is little known, even though his ideas on heredity 'were many years ahead of their time' and he is credited with the first use of the word 'biology'. The manuscript offered here is a contemporary criticism of Lawrence; it is dated in the later hand of Albert Bonus as 1827, but it may be slightly earlier as it is written on paper watermarked 1823. Bonus adds his own notes at the end of the manuscript: 'This treatise was written by my maternal grandfather John Frederick Courtenay. he was born in 1792 or 1793, and died July 27, 1858. He had a wonderful memory, was acquainted with nine languages. He was an excellent musician. a silk merchant by occupation and often travelled in Italy on his business.' This 'important and valuable treatise. was given to me by my aunt, Mrs. H. Sowerby (maiden name Lizzie Courtenay) daughter of the above. He was one of the family of the Earls of Devon, his father having been Rector of Lee, Kent & of St. George's, Hanover Square, London'. Courtenay was married to Ann Pullen and worked in the Customs Office; he died at Ramsgate in 1858. His library was sold by Leigh, Sotheby & John in the same year.
