Bound limited edition set of the portraits + Camel March taken from a proof set from the 1926 Subscribers edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, This is one of just 220 copies, this an unnumbered one, bound by the Fine Bindery and printed by the Burlington Press in 1977. These are superb reproductions of the plates from the '26 SP in full colour. Bound in pale beige paper covered boards with title printed to front and with darker brown cloth spine. T.E. Lawrence commissioned illustrations for Seven Pillars of Wisdom from leading artists of the day. They were reproduced in colour in his lavish 1926 edition of the subscribers' abridgement. The most important of the illustrations were portraits. These showed readers not just faces, but also the exotic clothing worn by the Arab irregulars. The forty-one Seven Pillars Portraits are reproduced here full-page in the original colours, together with William Roberts' remarkable double-page 'Camel March'. Emir Feisal by Augustus John, oils, full colour. These were printed from a set of proof plates put together by the original printer, Whittingham & Griggs.

An elusive issue with 24 illustrations on full-page plates and with 17 b/w line cuts from the 1926 SP not in any other issue or edition of Revolt in the Desert either in the UK or USA.This is an interesting variant printing with the line drawing missing from page 127, the gathering being slightly shorter. This means that there must have been two different bindings of this Gift edition. All othe bibliographical poins exact, Not referred to in O'Brien or other bibliographies. A very good copy in a rather worn d/w that shows signs of tape now removed. Nevertheless the d/w has done its job of protecting the binding. This is the large paper edition limited to 315 copies of which 300 were for sale. This copy Number 117. The size of the volume was dictated by the inclusion of the colour plates that were originally prepared for the legendary 1926 Subscribers edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and only issued in this edition. Altogether there are nineteen plates, the colour plates have tissue guards. Bound in brown buckram boards with dark pigskin spine lettered in gilt. In vg condition with very minor rub to top of spine. This is a handsome and imposing edition of a popular classic and is not really to be at all compared to the "ordinary" Cape trade edition, the colour plates are, as might be expected, sumptuous.In a letter to Wren Howard of Cape, TE commented, "The binding is surprisingly good: the paper excellent .
