Signed in the opening of the letter: "Sir Fenwick Williams regrets." with the place and date at the foot of the note: "U.S.C. /…14th June". A strip of document tape has been mounted down the right edge of the verso, covering up 1 word of the note. Good. Williams writes regretting he is unable to dine with Mrs. Ford because of a previous engagement. The note is accompanied by a newspaper obituary.General Sir William Fenwick Williams, 1st Baronet of Kars [1800-1883] was born in Nova Scotia. He was a renowned military leader for the British during the Victorian era, remembered for his gallant defense of the town of Kars during the Crimean War. He and other British officers inspired the poorly equipped Turkish soldiers to repel Russian attacks for three months. Starvation and lack of ammunition finally forced them to surrender, but they did so on their own terms. Williams was imprisoned but was treated very well and was released when the war ended in 1856. A knighthood, a baronetcy with a pension for life and many other honors were bestowed on Williams for his actions. From 1865 to 1867 he was the first Lieutenant Governor of his birth province of Nova Scotia.

In den WarenkorbWith printed pamphlet. Letter is one page, 12mo, tipped on to page extracted from personal album of Arthur Poyser, trimmed to fit a plastic envelope, with a small nick not affecting text, illustrating his career with the City of London Boy Scouts and the Boy Players (album offered separately). Buchan is only free for luncheon on… the Wednesday but would be happy to discuss "the book" [the first "Scouts' Song Book" published in 1912) with him then. Poyser has added a few lines of explanation, about where the luncheon took place and its subject "the Song Book Of the Scout Movement, compiled and edited by AP [Arthur Poyser]". Presumably Buchan declined to contribute. WITH; Printed pamphlet entitled "John Buchan. Some Recollections" [by Arthur Poyser] (offprint of article published in the "Stirling Sentinel", February 20, 1940), 4pp., 8vo, tipped on to the verso of the page extracted from personal album of Arthur Poyser referred to above, some folding of margin but item mainly good. Poyser adds in MS under item, "An Appreciation of John Buchan, by AP [Arthur Poyser], written shortly after tyhe announcement of his death while Governor General of Canada; Lord Tweedsmuir." He discusses showing the Scout songbook to Buchan seekinhg his opinions which Buchan gave with reminiscences. At another meeting they encountered at a Drapers Hall Dinner where Poyser's Boy Players performed some of the songs they had discussed years before. The final meeting involved a speech by Buchan, then becoming frail, at Poyser's University (Edinburgh), encouraging students to think of life as a pilgrimage.

In den WarenkorbFour pages, 4to, one page over-written, sl. stained and aged, text complete apart from minor loss with seal, and legible. His first two pages relate to family matters, including (perhaps) significant references to "Elizabeth" - James Campbell had a daughter called but he reflects on "the present state of things" including inform…ation and opinion that would be censored in later wars. "But when that most desirable period [return home] will arrive it is impossible in the present state of thingseven to guess at. As far as one can judge however I should think it cannot be very distant - Our Reg[imen]t is so very weak that if we do not get reinforcements out we can be of very little use. We have upwards of 260 sick & our men are dying fast- We can produce perhaps 240 on parade including servants &c but [one?] half of the men have suffered so much that if we were to move the would knock up in three days.- As to the Army at large and its probable movements, every body is in the dark. Should we go again into Spain it will be again[st] the wish of almost every officer - The sic[k]ness is really shocking, & could the English public be made acquainted with its extent would certainly make a great noise - I should think since the Army came into Cantonments at least 5000 men must have died by sickness - In short it is dreadful, and we cannot be in a fit state for the field for a long time - In passing by the hospital of the [82nd?] Regt the other day, I saw them digging some graves, & the Serjeant told me they had eight men laying dead that morning - In the field, one passes over dead bodies without feeling much, but when in quarters you see men dropping off by disease in crowds it really makes a man melancholy - I have seen quite enough of what they call honor & glory, and wish I was quietly settles in some [?] cottage at home, where I could dig up my little garden, and poke up my fire, leaving these scenes of death & destruction to those who are fond of them- It is only a few weeks since I joined the Regt and on looking over a list of men that I brought with me from Lisbon, I find there are already 5 dead, & 12 sick in hospital, out of 30.".

This correspondence illuminates several things, including the functions of a Private Secretary and Chancellor, the economic, political and financial issues of the period, and the strong impression of Northcote's interest and competence. They derive from the Papers of John Arrow Kempe who later became Knight Comptroller and Auditor General. They are accompanied by notes and memoranda by Northcote sent (or given) to Kempe relating to the issues affecting Parliament and the Country during Northcote's career as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary (1874-1886), 22pp., 12mo and 8vo, some tipped on to sl. larger page. Kempe (presumably) has docketed many with date and other information. Each semi-colon indicates a separate page. Subjects include: taxation (inc. "war taxation", "emergency tax", etc; docketed one page "Budget 1876"); dissenters and churchmen (docketed "Burials Bill.January 1876"); Friendly Societies Bill (1874); Friendly Societies Act; Docketed "Notes for a speech before the [rising?] of Parliament either 1876 or 1877" mentioning "Prospects in Turkey | in India [.] in the Colonies | at home", depression, remedies (protection); Docketed "Reply to Hartington on vote for £6.000.000" and [notes for] "Speech Feb. 8 1878"; Docketed "Notes for closing speech on vote for £6.000.000 Feb. 78", involving "1. Freedom of the Black Sea &c | 2. Guard Road to India | 3. Peaceful resettlement", The latter involves Races (Greece), Religions (Mussulman as well as others) "Dynastic ambitions not to be got rid of by words"; N.B. Note (by Kempe presumably) on reverse of the notes for the afore-mentioned notes for the speech confirms that the Speech was about the £6,000,000 to be granted "in increasing the Naval and Military services at the present. In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good. - Daniel Adams Butterfield's signature as treasurer penned on a 2 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide piece of paper clipped from the bottom of a typed letter. The close, signed by Butterfield as treasurer, apparently called for the recipient of the letter to return a document or letter "to the Treasurer in envelope… enclosed herewith". The close is additionally initialed in an unknown hand at left. Folded twice, else very good. The New York businessman Daniel Adams Butterfield (1831-1901) served as brigadier general in the Union army during the Civil War. While recuperating from wounds sustained at Gaines' Mill, Butterfield revised the Scott Tattoo, thus composing the bugle call "Taps" which is played at the end of military funerals and to signal "lights out". As Hooker's chief of staff, he was later embroiled in his commander's political feuds with Burnside and Meade. Butterfield was wounded at Gettysburg and subsequently served in Sherman's Atlanta campaign. He went on to serve as Assistant Treasurer of the U.S. under Grant but was forced to resign when he abused his position to manipulate the price of gold.
