It was constructed during World War II to provide a contiguous U.S. to Alaska route through Canada. When Lanks made the trip about which writes in this book, the route, completed in 1942, was not yet officially open (it would be in 1948). It reached practically as far as Fairbanks beyond which it forked a bit north and west.…
