Nalini de Lanerolle structures the narrative around major dynastic and architectural milestones, beginning with the legendary arrival of Prince Vijaya and the early establishment of the Anuradhapura Kingdom under Pandukabhaya. The text traces the profound religious transformation of the island, detailing King Devanampiya Tissa's embrace of Buddhism at Mihintale and the subsequent proliferation of cave temples during the reign of Vattagamini Abhaya. Significant attention is devoted to the monumental engineering and architectural achievements of the Sinhalese kings, including the massive irrigation networks commissioned by Mahasena and Dhatusena, as well as the tragic, visually spectacular creation of the Sigiriya rock fortress by Kasyapa. The latter portions of the book focus on the medieval era, specifically the liberation of the island from Chola rule by Vijayabahu I and the cultural renaissance of the Polonnaruwa period orchestrated by Parakramabahu the Great. By synthesizing classical Pali chronicles like the Mahavamsa with archaeological evidence, the volume offers an overview of the political, religious, and infrastructural development of early Sri Lanka. -- Contents: From the Past; 1. 483-445 BC: The Shores of Taprobane - Vijaya; 2. 377-307 BC: Anuradhapura: A Sacred City - Pandukabhaya; 3. 250-210 BC: A Call from Mihintale - Devanampiyatissa [Devanampiya Tissa]; 4. 161-137 BC: The Mahavamsa's Greatest King - Dutugemunu [Dutugamunu]; 5. 103-89-77 BC: An Age of Cave Temples - Vattagamani Abhaya [Vattagamini Abhaya]; 6. 274-301 AD: Great Engineering Feats - Mahasena; 7. 455-473 AD: A Legacy to His People - Dhatusena; 8. 473-491 AD: The Tragedy of a God-King - Kasyapa; 9. 1055-1110 AD: A Hero from the South - Vijayabahu I; 10. 1153-1186 AD: Polonnaruwa: An Age to Remember - Parakramabahu I; The End of a Line of Kings; Some references.…
