Lascades died before he could share the information he gathered with Napoleon and the notes he left were allegedly destroyed by the British, but a French orientalist acquired Sayghir's diary and writings and published it in 1835/1836.

Scarce first edition of Lamartine's account of his travels with his wife and daughter which led him to become known as l'Emir Francais. The death of his daughter in Beirut and political affairs in France led him to return home overland through Constantinople and the Danube valley. This work is complete with its 2 engraved plates, each one protected with a tissue-guard, one folding table in Arabic and French, with tribal names and census, and two folding maps at the rear. Age-wear on binding with closed tears along both front joints (but boards holding firmly), rubbing along edges, spine and head and tail of spines slightly chipped. Light damp-staining along upper margin of very first pages of first volume (not affecting text). Some foxing on pages throughout. Text in French. Overall about a good copy.
