Bound in blue cloth covered hard boards and with the original publisher's price-clipped dust jacket. VG- book which has some marking to the front board, a small bookseller's label (University Book Store, Singapore) to the front pastedown, and is otherwise clean within. Jacket is Very Good, tanned to spine and with a little chipping to the top corners.

This volume contains a preface, a list of principal characters, a summary of volume one and an introduction by Arthur Waley in three parts, namely, Fiction in Japan Previous to the Tale of Genji, The Art of Murasaki, and Note on the Text.

A richly illustrated first edition of this book for children by Lady Pamela Tennant. In the publisher's original cloth binding. 21 plates including the frontispiece, most of which are colour reproductions of famous portraits by well-known artists such as Reynolds and Hogarth. Collated complete. Viscountess Pamela Grey of Fallodon (born Wyndham; later Pamela Tennant, Baroness Glenconner; 1871-1928), was an English writer of poems, prose and children's literature. She was one of the Wyndham Sisters painted by John Singer Sargent, part of the literary circle known as The Souls, and was friends with Henry James, Oscar Wilde and Edward Burne-Jones. This work is one of her children's books, in which the stories and occasional poems are based around the famous paintings reproduced in the volume. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very smart, with good colour to the boards, though there is a light stain to the front board and the spine is slightly sunned. Internally, the binding is slightly strained in a couple of places. Pages are generally bright and clean, with spotting to the fore edge that affects the occasional page, and the odd spot to the first few pages. Very Good. book.

Helen Scarlett, Lady Abinger (1840-1915) was mother to two extraordinary daughters, Ella Campbell Scarlett (1864-1937), the first woman doctor in Bloemfontein, South Africa and at the Royal Columbian Hospital, Canada, and Evangelina Haverfield (1867-1920), Suffragette, aid worker, and partner of Vera Jack Holme.

Written by Cecil Frances Alexander, an Anglo-Irish hymnwriter and poet. Best known as the writer of "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "There is a Green Hill Far Away" and the Christmas carol "Once in Royal David's City". Set to music by Annie Jessie Fortescue Harrison, also known as Annie, Lady Hill and Lady Arthur Hill, an English composer of songs and piano pieces. Dated from the University of Cambridge Libraries. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Light fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound.
