Although the book deals with only three geographic locationsSinai, Greece, and Yugoslaviathe breadth of knowledge of the authors is such that the text is anything but a fragmentary record. In spite of the limitations of present archeological data, these men have done a marvelous job in presenting this subject with depth and clarity. Ultimately, however, it is the illustrations which make this such a precious volume. The over one hundred reproductions, 59 of which are in color, fully capture the grandeur of the originals. Saints and Gospel scenes, encaustics and mosaics, naive and masterful works are all represented in this collection. Such visual splendor, along with the expert analysis of the authors, gives ICONS the ability to delight and to educate the reader.
