Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A suspenseful family saga, love story, and gangster tale, wrapped into one great book club read . . Just before WWI, Golda comes to America yearning for independence, but she tosses aside her dreams of freedom and marries her widowed brother-in-law after her sister dies giving birth to their son, Morty. In the crowded streets of Brooklyn where Jewish and Italian gangs demand protection money from local storekeepers and entice youngsters with the promise of wealth, Golda, Ben, and Morty thrive as a family. But in the Depression, Ben, faced with financial ruin, makes a dangerous, life-altering choice. Morty tries to save his father by getting help from a gangster friend but the situation only worsens. Forced to desert his family and the woman he loves in order to survive, Morty is desperate to go home. Will he ever find a safe way back? Or has his involvement with the gang sealed his fate? Another stunning work of historical fiction by Florence Reiss Kraut, Street Corner Dreams is an exploration of a timeless question: how much do we owe the families that have sacrificed for and shaped us - and does that debt outweigh what we owe ourselves and our own hopes and dreams for a better life.…

Hardback. Zustand: Fair. In a time when Catholic piety is often fixed on the Good Friday stations of the cross, and evangelical piety is associated with an imaginary what would Jesus do, and much of Protestant religion has slimmed Jesus down from the fully dimensioned Christology of the Gospels, and contemporary Christianity misses a Christ who has moved into the neighborhood (John 1:14) and fully engaged the world and its peoples, and touring liberals tout how little a Christian actually needs to believe, this book chooses fourteen episodes from Jesus' entire life and makes them way stations on a pilgrimage on which we gather to meet Jesus in person, share him in community, and follow him to a fully realized discipleship. Such way stations may recall the medieval imitation of Christ or the notion of a Christian pilgrimage during which we make the way by walking. Historically, pilgrimage is meant to evoke I want to be in that number. Yet identifying these stations is fully congruent with contemporary New Testament scholarship, whether liberal or historically orthodox. The significance of this book is that it sets forth a process of adult Christian education today that is rich with all the dimensions of Jesus' life, from birth to death and resurrection, with all the happenings in between. And most important, it turns adult Christian education into a compelling Bible study in community, and one that attracts participation like walking a labyrinth. Through such engagement it recovers for lively practice today the mostly forgotten medieval imitatio Christi and inserts this into the nearly forgotten but once vividly realized practice of pilgrimage, overdue today as a way of imprinting the Christian walk onto the culture and onto individual believers and their communities. Finally, it follows contemporary Gospel scholarship back to the historical Jesus, through visionary Holy Land tours or a modern walking the way stations that constitute Jesus' own life and our immersion in it that would constitute true discipleship.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. How insights from the social sciences, including social psychology and economics, can improve the design of online communities.Online communities are among the most popular destinations on the Internet, but not all online communities are equally successful. For every flourishing Facebook, there is a moribund Friendster--not to mention the scores of smaller social networking sites that never attracted enough members to be viable. This book offers lessons from theory and empirical research in the social sciences that can help improve the design of online communities. The authors draw on the literature in psychology, economics, and other social sciences, as well as their own research, translating general findings into useful design claims. They explain, for example, how to encourage information contributions based on the theory of public goods, and how to build members' commitment based on theories of interpersonal bond formation. For each design claim, they offer supporting evidence from theory, experiments, or observational studies.…

Hardback. Zustand: Fair. Amid concerns over use of TB and AIDS to exclude immigrants, this book looks at how earlier generations grappled with such problems, from the Irish immigrants of New York wrongly blamed for the cholera epidemic in 1832 to Miami's Haitian refugees stigmatized as AIDS carriers in the 1980s.…
