STEFAN KRAUS 1945-1947 . die einzige Möglichkeit, Hoffnung zu haben, war, in dieser zerstörten Stadt zu wohnen, erinnerte sich Heinrich Böll an seine Rückkehr nach Köln im November 1945: "In der Stadt wohnten nicht nur dreißigtausend Einwohner, außerdem noch: zwei Madonnen. Die eine schön, später Trümmermadonna genannt, die andere nicht schön, aber groß, sehr alt, erdhaft, unsymmetrisch, mit gläsernen Augen. Sie steht in Sankt Maria im Kapitol. Vier Wochen vor der Rückkehr des Schriftstellers war es Oberpfarrer Joseph Geller (1877-1958), der vermutlich als erster den Gedanken aufbrachte, die spätgotische Ma-donna inmitten der Ruine von St. Kolumba könne Anlass des Gedenkens und Zeichen der Hoffnung werden, "als sollte Kolumba vielleicht die Trauer- und Gedenkstätte an die Toten und an den Schicksalstag der Stadt Köln werden. Mitten in dem Getriebe der späteren City [!] der Großstadt wäre diese Stätte sicher gerechtfertigt als Andenken an die große Katastrophe des deutschen Volkes und der Kölner Bürgerschaft im Besonderen."
