Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: Peter Ackroyd was born in London in 1949 and educated at St. Benedict's School, Ealing. He graduated from Clare College, Cambridge and then won a research fellowship to study at Yale University from 1971-73. He was awarded the Whitbread Prize and the Guardian Fiction Prize. Described as one of the most original 1980s British writers, Ackroyd was compared with novelists such as Salman Rushdie or Jeanette Winterson. Modestly, Ackroyd considers his output, which includes poetry, biographies, and novels simply as 'writing', being the result of the simple creative impulse. 'One can [.] assume that unlike any piece of fiction, metafiction is fiction about fiction, i.e. fiction which self-consciously reflects upon its own nature, its modes of production, and its intended effect on the reader.'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 5.0, Jan Kochanowski University of Humanities and Sciences in Kielce, language: English, abstract: In this society driven by the need to reproduce as much as one could - just to fight back the Communists, children were the obvious center of the suburban life, as well as the reason why so many families decided to leave big cities and transfer to these areas where the feeling of safety and community were dominant. And so - although contained in their suburban realms and living both the dream life of wife in modern house and a scared woman in the nuclear threat era, 1950's housewives had another aspect to be aware of - the moral standards they had to keep up.[However] Beneath the illusion of happiness, women wanted more - more power, more control over their lives and above everything - more autonomy. But it was all forbidden and what is even worse - it was stuffed between the warped morality of 1950s and social standard empowered by the government, where male dominance resurfaced as if it were reborn in the pure form of Victorian society.

Some of the concepts in the novel are borrowed from Greek Mythology, like the fauns, centaur, dryads, and minotaur, while giants, dwarfs are from the Norse mythology. Also, elements of Christianity are also seen in the novel, such as Aslan the lion, often compared to Jesus Christ. Apart from these, one can trace the various archetypal images, so strongly linked with the one very particular type of the story - that of the quest.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Cultural Studies - European Studies, , language: English, abstract: The presence of Muslim communities in Europe dates back to the turn of the twentieth century, when such immigrants began arriving from European empires. United Kingdom has traditionally welcomed immigrants, but just as elsewhere, their integration was seen through specific prisms. A community that insists on a primarily spiritually derived identity creates some issues that require adaptation.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: Young Asians do not have language difficulties. This means that, as more Asian children grow up in Britain, there will be more chance to create friendships across ethnic boundaries, at least in theory. However, both Asian parents and young people still face hostility and sometimes discrimination from some sections of the white population, which discourages inter-ethnic friendships. There is a strong tendency to see South Asians in Britain but not as part of Britain. The representation of Asians in Britain continues to be refracted through a prism, which is unable to come to terms with the postcolonial nature of the South Asian presence. South Asian culture continues to be regarded as static, traditional or antimodern, patriarchal and authoritarian. This is in contrast to British/Western culture. Here, the most important obstacle is the idea of Western culture and values as being the norm and criterion in relation to which other cultures have to be positioned.
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 5.0 (PL-System), Jan Kochanowski University of Humanities and Sciences in Kielce (UJK), language: English, abstract: The title of my project: William Golding - the Novelist of British Post-war Era allowed me to present one of the most imaginative writers of 1950's of England from a several different perspectives. The decision behind choosing such topic was dictated by the previous interests which emerged as a result of my earlier contacts with the British culture. Various British novelists and playwrights who emerged in the 1950's expressed disaffection with the established socio-political order of their country. Their impatience and resentment were especially aroused by what they perceived as the hypocrisy of the upper and middle classes. They were called Angry Young Men - a journalistic catchphrase originally used by British newspapers after the success of the play Look Back in Anger by the playwright John Osborne. Evil nature of human, religious symbolism and ever-present pessimism. Few novels as brief as William Golding's Lord of the Flies raise so many fascinating questions. Are human beings evil and how does evil arise What is the nature of isolation Why and how do we choose our leaders and what are a leader's responsibilities The list could continue for several pages and still barely touch the peak of the mountain, yet each is a significant one worthy to be considerate.Lord of the Flies, full of Christian imagery and symbolism, in the end has a very humanistic lesson - if the beast is within us we can cope with it. Rather than being under the influence of a supernatural devil - which in fact Golding claimed not to be the force present on the island - we are confronted with our own original sin and depravity. Once removed from the bounds and rules of civilization we have a strong tendency to revert to brutality and savagery. As Golding illustrates with Simon, though, there is goodness within people as well. If that goodness is reinforced, we have hope of overcoming the evil.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, , language: English, abstract: The essential elements of the romantic spirit were curiosity and the love - the one of beauty and the more 'natural', down-to-earth form - passion and eroticism; and it is only as an illustration of these qualities, that it looked for in the Middle Age, because, in the overcharged atmosphere of the Middle Age, there are unworked sources of romantic effect, of a strange beauty, to be won, by strong imagination, out of things unlikely or remote.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 5.0, Jan Kochanowski University of Humanities and Sciences in Kielce, language: English, abstract: This paper refers to numerous faces that love takes in the novel 'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Bronte. The aim of the paper is to analyze the various aspects, described by Emily Brontë as love, which in fact, lead to terror, destruction and misery for most of the characters.Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering Heights' of 1847 had an amazing impact on novelists to come and with the moment of its appearance, it is said to have revolutionized the gothic genre. Sadly, Emily did not live long enough to enjoy its effect. The first of many new editions was issued in 1850, two years after Emily's death, it had a preface written by Charlotte who used this opportunity to try to explain to the Victorian readers how such violent subject matter could have been imagined and put into words by her sister.Adopted by the authors of Gothic literature, the idea of the sublime became a central factor for the Gothic writings, around which all the action is built. As such, the novel 'Wuthering Heights' has all of the above mentioned elements -there is no feeling of security, there are tormenting emotions and ruins both of the buildings and of the metaphorical - of love and humanity.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Nations, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: The paper is supposed to provide a truly comprehensive annotated reference work giving information on national festivals and holidays, with descriptive entries covering religious, cultural, ethnic, historical, popular, and sports celebrations from Britain and America, with sections on calendar systems, and tables of state and national public holidays. The range of festivals and secular holidays in the various countries of the world is now vast. In modern times the proliferation of national and local events has also resulted in scores of special group days, and even whimsical and bizarre observances, ranging from very unique celebration of All Saints Day both in Poland and Ireland, to the Rat's Wedding Day in China. Nevertheless, this thesis focuses on the Anglo-Saxon festivals, traditions and holidays as celebrated in America and Britain. The celebration of special days and seasons, both religious and secular, is universal. From primitive times onward, special rites and festivals marked the religious mysteries of existence - the miracle of birth, life, death, and rebirth in the environment and in individual human experience. Such celebrations fulfilled a deep-seated longing in the human psyche, evoking profound emotions associated with the changing pattern of the year, the expecting of spring, the joys of summer, the harvest, the decline of the year through fall to the rigors of winter, and the promise of a new spring coming. Inevitably such celebrations involved a measurement of time, so that seasonal festivals could take place at appropriate dates in the cycle of the year.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject History - America, Jan Kochanowski University of Humanities and Sciences in Kielce, language: English, abstract: Equal numbers of men and women report frequent stress in daily life, and most agree that government and businesses have failed to adjust to the changes in the family. That are the daily life realities - for most of the people, they mean that they need to struggle and remain satisfied with what they have.As a whole, the paper was to emphasize how women are capable of developing and achieving what should rightfully be also theirs, even in the periods when women were a mere possession.
