Separatum. Zustand: Gut. pp. 181-224. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name and year of publication handwritten on cover, otherwise a pristine copy. - From the text: The latter half of the eighteenth century witnessed a decisive change in the appreciation of Homer. Even long after the conclusion of the Querelle entre les Anciens et les Modernes an influential figure like Voltaire would consider Virgil, and not Homer, to be the uncontested master of world literature.1 Half a century later, however, there were, at least in North-West Europe, few who did not reserve this place for Homer. This rapid reassessment of two of the founding heroes of European culture also had an impact on the visual arts. A count of the Iliad motifs in European art has shown, for example, that of a total of about three hundred works, two hundred are concentrated within the period 1750 1825, the remainder being more or less equally distributed throughout the centuries before and after this central period. The period in question also witnessed a remarkable growth in the quantity of commonly-known Homeric motifs: while the standard repertoire seems to have numbered around a dozen prior t.o 1750, it increased gradually during the subsequent decades to more than forty. - Wikipedia: Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard (11 September 1743 4 June 1809) was a Danish neoclassical and royal history painter, sculptor, architect, and professor of painting, mythology, and anatomy at the New Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, Denmark. Many of his works were in the royal Christiansborg Palace (some destroyed by fire 1794), Fredensborg Palace, and Levetzau Palace at Amalienborg. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Separatum. Zustand: Gut. pp. 137-185. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name and year of publication handwritten on cover, otherwise a pristine copy. - From the text: In the 1790 s a spectre haunted Europe - the spectre of Brutus. Everywhere where there was talk of the Revolution, Brutus was present. In the Roman Republic the name of Lucius Junius Brutus had been an anti-tyrannical watchword. The expulsion of the kings and the founding of the Republic had given him a role in the history of Rome which was comparable to that held by the Greek tyrannicides. And when Marcus Junius Brutus followed in his ancestor s footsteps and murdered the tyrant Julius Caesar, the foundation had been laid for one of the enduring myths in Europe. As the patron saints of the Revolution, the figures of Brutus have challenged opinion for centuries. Men like Vergil, Dante, Shakespeare, Schiller and Alfieri have either condemned or acclaimed their exploits.
