Aunque Crítica y crisis alcanzó una temprana versión española, adelantándose a otras italiana, francesa, americana, portuguesa, por este orden menos madrugadoras, esas otras versiones arremolinaron en su entorno cuando menos fermentos de curiosidad y seguramente atención cuidadosa y receptiva. No así en España, donde, precisamente de mediados de los años sesenta a mediados de los setenta del pasado siglo, la historiografía propia experimentaba un vuelco espectacular con la mirada puesta en otros horizontes. Hoy, cuando ese olvido se compensa con atención creciente desde Filosofía e Historia, atención razonablemente volcada hacia el último Koselleck el cuajado en el resultado imponente del actual edificio de la Begriffsgeschichte, quizás no esté de más el contrapunto de la obra primeriza, y de la atmósfera que le era propia. Publicado en 1959, como reelaboración de una primera tesis de 1954, el libro se gestó en un entorno atravesado de futuros pasados poco habitables. Se reconocen en su texto estratos que remiten a otra postguerra. Y se empecina en implicar en su trama la relación, no precisamente transparente, entre Ilustración y política. La relación, entonces, entre publicidad y arcano; entre Filosofía de la historia y otras experiencias del tiempo; entre monumentalización de la crítica y velamiento de la crisis; entre formas indirectas de poder y defraudaciones palmarias del derecho. Un plexo de relaciones que constituye y deconstruye lo que se viene identificando como Modernidad y su despliegue como razón catastrófica. La mirada de Koselleck se desliza «sobre el presente ya transcurrido, y no sobre el pasado de dicho presente en cuanto tal pasado». Es esta atención al presente lo que convierte a esta obra, siendo lectura de historia, en lectura intempestiva. Léxico histórico del lenguaje político-social en Alemania», del que se han extraído las tres voces que se reúnen en el presente volumen. Koselleck fue el principal proveedor de las directrices programáticas de esa cartografía conceptual de la modernidad, a la par trabajo teórico y de campo, historia conceptual uncida a una teoría de los tiempos históricos. En el lapso temporal cubierto por dicho programa, de 1750 a 1850, se forja y adquiere pregnancia la tríada conceptual aquí propuesta: lustración, progreso, modernidad. A la primicia conceptual y terminológica de la Ilustración le es inherente una conciencia de ruptura que llega a su apoteosis con la Revolución francesa y anuncia la mudanza del mismo concepto de revolución, que de significar previamente un movimiento cíclico y recurrente pasa a mentar un acontecimiento único e irrepetible y a inaugurar un futuro ignoto. Aquí se inCuba la modernidad entendida como un tiempo nuevo, el de la aceleración, que, para autoafirmarse, se ve constreñido a desgajar de sí lo que lo refuta, esto es, lo antiguo, recurriendo a la estrategia de emanciparse compulsivamente de la tradición. El progreso, etimológicamente «paso hacia delante», es decantación hacia el futuro.
