In this region, the Global Change Impacts on Terrestrial Ecosystems in Monsoon Asia (TEMA) project was carried out as a unique contribution to the international project Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems. TEMA aimed to integrate forest ecosystem processes, from leaf physiology to meteorological budget and prediction of long-term change of vegetation composition and architecture through demographic processes. Special attention was given to watershed processes, where forest ecosystem metabolism affects the properties and biogeochemical budgets of freshwater ecosystems, and where rivers, wetlands, and lakes are subject to direct and indirect effects of environmental change. [62 Seiten.] Nahezu tadelloses Exemplar. - Das Nebeneinander der Textilien von Chiyoko Tanaka und der Keramiken von Yasuhisa Kohyama weckt ein besonderes Gefühl für das Material von Textilien überhaupt und ganz besonders dafür, was Textilien im allgemeinen nicht sind. Die Beschaffenheit von Fasern und die Art, wie sie zu Garn versponnen werden, machen Gewebe zu idealen zweidimensionalen Motivträgern. Ihre Schmiegsamkeit und ihre taktilen Qualitäten sind ursächlich dafür, daß sie körperhaft wirken - ungeachtet dessen, ob sie ihre Struktur vom Körper des Trägers erhalten oder ob sie ihre Form in eigenständigen Skulpturen finden. In den Textilarbeiten von Chiyoko Tanaka geht es um die Frage nach Volumen von Oberflächen. Ihre Gewebe nämlich haben Körperlichkeit. ob sie nun an der Wand hängen oder was ich am schönsten finde auf dem Boden ausgebreitet liegen. Als Weberin arbeitet sie mit Kette und Schuß in die Horizontale und Vertikale. Als Künstlerin baut sie mit diesen beiden Dimensionen rechteckige Strukturen in ausgewogenen Proportionen auf. Sie bedient sich der Farbe, um Strukturen zu betonen. Einzelheiten wie z. B. die herabhängenden Enden der gefärbten Kettfäden bezieht sie mit ein, um einen vollkommenen Klang zu erzielen. Chiyoko Tanaka ist sich der symbolischen oder sogar mystischen Werte bewußt, die das Zusammengehen von Horizontalem und Vertikalem verkörpern kann. Sicherlich ist für einen Weber die Art, wie Schußfäden durch die Kette hindurchgeführt werden, ein Symbol für das Vergehen der Zeit. In dieser Hinsicht unterscheidet sie sich nicht von ihren Fachkollegen. Was ihr Werk jedoch außergewöhnlich macht, ist die Art, wie sie Maß, Form und Struktur ihrer Gewebe anreichert. Ihre Stoffe sind eine Materie, aus der durch Reiben und Hinzufügen von Ton eine andere Materie entsteht. Sie bearbeitet ihre Tücher auf rauhem Untergrund mit Steinen, treibt, verschleißt und verdichtet sie. Dies geschieht an einem bestimmten Platz in ihrem Garten. Der aufmerksame Betrachter erkennt, wie sich die Unregelmäßigkeiten des Untergrundes in der Stoffbahn wiederholen. Der Eindruck des Abgenutzten ihrer Tücher wird durch das Hinzufügen von Ton noch verstärkt. Das Zusammenspiel von Garnen, deren Verschiedenheit durch die Regelmäßigkeit des Webprozesses hervorgehoben wird, und die Art, wie das fertige Gewebe verschlissen, löchrig und mit Ton verdichtet wurde, vermitteln den Eindruck von Tiefe und Körperhaftigkeit, der für Textilien eigentlich ungewöhnlich ist. Die Kombination eines tiefen Blaus mit Naturtönen verstärken ihn noch. Der japanischen Kultur ist eine autonome bildende Kunst wesensfremd. Sie mußte importiert werden. Gerade in der Textilkunst führte dies zu Meisterleistungen. Japanische Textilkünstler können sich auf eine hervorragende handwerkliche Tradition in der Textilkunst stützen, gleichzeitig fühlen sie aber auch den Ansporn, sich dem Abenteuer des Unbekannten zu stellen.
