The region is not only characterized by the presence of several vast arid deserts such as the Arabian desert, Syrian desert and the Karakum but also harbors extensive mountain chains rich in streams, rivers, marshes and lakes including the Caucasus, Zagros and Hindu Kush. These combination of strong geographic differences in combination with its position between the Afrotropical, Oriental and Palearctic realm result in an interesting and diverse odonate fauna.Dragonflies and damselflies are good indicators of the quality of freshwater habitats and are colorful ambassadors for the preservation of freshwater ecosystems. In West and Central Asia the combination of climate change and an ever increasing demand for freshwater for drinking and agriculture will result in increased desertification and habitat degradation. The future of some of the species occurring in the area is therefore gloomy and some might not make it to the end of the century.This Atlas deals with no less than 175 (sub)species, many of which are endemic to the region or occur just marginally outside the region. For each species a distribution map is presented showing its occurrence in the region and adjacent areas. Texts for each species give basic information on the distribution, habitat preferences and, in some cases, taxonomical information. Although this atlas is not an identification guide, it will definitely help to identify most of the species in the region as it contains images of nearly all species, many of which have seldom been depicted in books before. We hope that this book will help to raise local awareness about this group of freshwater species and will contribute in a better protection and management of freshwater ecosystems.

Na de Voorlopige Verspreidingsatlas uit 1986 - de eerste realisatie van de Libellenwerkgroep Gomphus - was het tijd om alle gegevens die sedertdien verzameld werden te publiceren in een nieuw boek. Honderden medewerkers leverden waarnemingen en ongeveer 65?000 records zijn er in verwerkt; sommige daarvan gaan bijna twee eeuwen terug. Het belangrijkste deel beschrijft op telkens 2 pagina's elk van de 69 soorten libellen die ooit in België gevonden werden. Aan bod komen het areaal in Europa, de verspreiding in België, de evolutie van die verspreiding in ons land en de habitat. Ook geven we van elke soort de eerste en laatste waarnemingsdatum. Van elke soort is er ook een foto. Een grafiek toont de vliegperiode. Twee kaarten illustreren de verspreiding. Een grote kaart de huidige (1990-2000) op basis van 5x5 km UTM-hokken en een kleinere kaart met alle gegevens met verschillende symbolen verdeeld over drie periodes ( 1980) op basis van 10x10 km UTM-hokken. Per soort wordt ook de Rode Lijst-categorie aangegeven. After the Provisional Distribution Atlas from 1986 - the first achievement of the Gomphus Dragonfly Working Group - it was time to publish all the data that had been collected since then in a new book. Hundreds of employees provided observations and approximately 65,000 records have been processed; some of them go back almost two centuries. The most important part describes each of the 69 species of dragonflies that have ever been found in Belgium on 2 pages each. The range in Europe, the distribution in Belgium, the evolution of that distribution in our country and the habitat are discussed. We also give the first and last observation date of each species. There is also a photo of each species. A graph shows the flight period. Two maps illustrate the distribution. A large map of the current (1990-2000) based on 5x5 km UTM squares and a smaller map with all data with different symbols divided over three periods ( 1980) based on 10x10 km UTM squares. The Red List category is also indicated for each species. In addition to a short general introduction and a chapter on ecology and behaviour of dragonflies, the following topics are discussed: history of dragonfly faunal studies in Belgium; the organisation of the atlas project, a general analysis of the data (coverage of the territory over time, species-rich areas, increase in observations, .); dragonfly habitats in Flanders and Wallonia with their characteristic species; Red List Flanders; Red List Wallonia and the results of dragonfly monitoring in Wallonia. The last chapter contains some conclusions and a number of suggestions for conservation and management. A Dutch, English and German summary complete the whole. The book concludes with a list of names of Belgian dragonflies, a list of their status in the Brussels region and a complete bibliography of everything that has ever been published about dragonflies in our country.
