He received a law degree from the University of Maryland in 1920. Immediately after, he served as the assistant State's Attorney of Baltimore, and in 1923 he was elected State's Attorney of Baltimore City. He served in that position until he was elected Attorney General of Maryland in 1934. O'Conor was then elected Governor of Maryland in 1938, serving from 1939-1947, becoming the first Irish Catholic to hold this post. Finally, he was elected to the US Senate and served from 1947-1953, but he refused to run for reelection. "The Inevitable Success" describes "what it was like to be governor of the State during a time of war, and how that affected life as well as politics for a man who set out to be successful" and achieved his goals. With an introduction by Lyndon Johnson, who served with O'Conor in the Senate. Octavo. Blue cloth boards with red and gilt title label to spine. Minor wear to spine ends and edges.
