Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good +. 243 p. 44 cm. Glorious illustrations in colour and b&w, with many detail shots. Pattern pages for Vionnet's most well-known designs. Black hardcover. Corners slightly bumped. Dust wrapper has small stains and is rubbed. Endpapers lightly thumbed. Bottom corner of text block gently folded. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has the only copy of this rare edition listed on WorldCat, and theirs has the only English translation, later bound, in an envelope. This complete Japanese copy with dust wrapper includes the English translation packet with English Preface by Jacque Griffe. Issey Miyake wrote the Preface for the Japanese text, and facilitated the later English edition in 1998. Lovely reproductions of photographs by Irving Penn, Robert Freson, Edward Steichen, Man Ray, Cecil Beaton, Andre Durst, and Horst P. Horst, among others. Modern detail photographs celebrate the clothes and bring you close to the garments. Vionnet is most famous for inventing the bias cut and transforming women's fashion in the 1920s. The text also explores her enigmatic biography.
