Erste englische Ausgabe dieser berühmten Gemeinschaftsarbeit, in der die beiden Wissenschaftler erkennen, "daß eine jede verdampfbare Substanz, in eine Flamme gebracht, oder jeder glühende Dampf ein charakteristisches Spektrum habe, und daß das Spektrum deshalb ein ausgezeichnetes Mittel für die chemische Analyse sei und begründen dadurch die Spektralanalyse" (Darmstaedter).
