Publisher's red cloth, gilt, with top edge gilt, in pictorial dust-wrapper priced 10/6. Contents clean, school prize label, binding a little mottled, fragile jacke…t mostly complete with a few chips to upper panel and to crown, with a few neat tape strips to reverse side. Very good (uncommon in jacket). Kipling's complete series of popular tales told by 'Puck', traditionally a name for a malicious spirit or demon of popular superstition, and from the 16th century the name of a mischievous goblin (or Hobgoblin), similar to that appearing in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', the fairy scene from which is acted out here. Publisher's red cloth pictorially blocked in gilt, top edge gilt. Contents clean, a little toning to edges and endpapers, binding carefully handled, small pull…at crown. Charles Maurice Detmold and Edward Julius Detmold were English graphic artists, twins, born on 21 November 1883. Due to the illness of their father, they grew up in the care of their uncle, Dr E B Shuldham, who had acquired a notable collection of Japanese woodprints of plants and animals. This encouraged the twins to commence drawing animals and plants at a very early age, and resulted in a debut (aged 13) at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, with nature studies in the Japanese style. The Detmolds subsequently learned techniques of watercolour etching and of colour printing with copper plates.

Publisher…'s green and red cloth respectively, with gilt titles and decoration to spines and boards. Top edges gilt. Bookplate of the Colonial Club to front pastedown of volume I, with light spotting throughout. Light general wear to cloth. Second volume has a blue ink ownership stamp to fly-leaf, otherwise internally clean. Moderate wear to cloth, including some loss to headcap. Very good overall. The Jungle Book and its sequel comprise a selection of short stories-the best-known being the three tales centring on the adventures of the abandoned 'man cub', Mowgli. Other popular tales include 'Rikki-Tikki-Tavi', the story of a heroic mongoose, and 'Toomai of the Elephants', the tale of a young elephant-handler.
