Manuskript / Papierantiquität
(1788) Letter, bifolium, , cr. 8vo, good condition, one page giving assurances as to quality, etc., with list (essentially a quote) of prices/features of "A new Fashionable Chariot with a [?] light coloured cloth, Painted a Green [?] Patent yellow, made of the best materials & season'd timber", followed by a price list of various features (blinds, plated head plates, steps, strong plated harness, packing etc etc). See image. (1799) 1p., 4to, bifolium, very good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed in another hand on reverse of second leaf to 'Monsieur le Doctor Brown | Medicin de la Majesté la Reine | regnante de Prusse | Berlin', and docketed (presumably by Brown) 'J. Randall Coachmaker | 1789 | London June 30 | recd. July 13 - | with a Receipt in full inclosed -' (the receipt is not present). Brown begins: 'I have sent you enclos'd a receipt in full for what you was Indebted to me'. He would have answered Brown's letter before, but has been 'very Ill for these six weeks past & oblig'd to be by the Sea side'. He returns his 'most sincere thanks' for Brown's 'kind Favor's [sic]', and hopes to have 'any future Commissions which you wish to have executed'. Randall was one of the foremost London coachmakers of the period, serving in 1806 as Master of the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers of London. He was also a member of Dunckerley's Lodge of Harmony No. 255. There are several references to Brown and his family in 'Berlin and the Prussian Court in 1798: Journal of Thomas Boylston Adams, Secretary to the United States Legation at Berlin' (1916), and there is a disparaging comment on him in 'The Diaries and Letters of Sir George Jackson' (London: Bentley, 1872), vol.1, p.113.

Softcover. Zustand: Fine. Magazine. (12)pp. Single sheets printed both sides and secured with a staple. Fine. An influential mimeograph published by Jones and di Prima featuring some of the most important poets of the 20th Century. Unlike other magazines, this so-called "newsletter" was distributed via a mailing list, many of which were noted poets, journalists, critics, publishers and artists. 2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Text complete, on aged paper with a number of closed tears repaired with archival tape. The second leaf of the bifolium, lacking a strip at the top, is docketed 'Dr. Morris of Parliament Street's Success in curing Persons afflicted with Complaints similar to that which His Majesty labours under'. Considering the political content at the end of the letter, the author is probably Charles Hamilton, at the time of writing known by his courtesy title of Lord Binning. Hamilton begins his letter: 'I beg leave to communicate to you that Doctor Morris of Parliament Street, Physician to the Army & of great skill & ability has lately successfully recovered three Persons labouring under the same disorder which now afflicts our gracious Sovereign; viz: Mr. Woolery of Jamaica, Mr. Walker of John Street & lastly the Anatomist Mr. Sheldon whose case in particular he considers to have been exactly parallel to that of His Majesty. [According to his entry in the Oxford DNB, Sheldon had an attack of 'brain fever' in 1788.] Doctor Morris moreover, has repeatedly declared to me that he had not a doubt, with the Almighty's blessing, of restoring the King in a short time'. Morris is 'well known to & in habits of friendship with Mr. Dundas of Richmond'. He ends with by discussing some political matters: 'after several flattering assurances, Mr. Rose at last has declined all together entering the minute promised by Mr. Pitt & [.] unless you have the goodness to speak your self to the Minister on the subject, nothing will be done'. In reporting Morris's death, The Times, 31 May 1791, described him as: late Inspector General and Physician to his Majesty's forces in America.' Munk's Roll states that he was 'elected physician to the Westminster hospital in 1761, and retained his office for thirty years'. It also states, apparently erroneously, that he was a Fellow of the Royal Society.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium, with Foss's letter (33 lines) on both sides of the first leaf, and the page of extracts by the recipient (38 lines) on the recto of the second leaf. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with one corner of the first leaf cut away. The letter is addressed to 'My dear Sir', without any indication of the recipient's identity. Foss begins: 'It is so long ago since I studied the Rebellion, that I forget what I may have learned relative to John Cooke, he never having been an English Judge, and therefore not falling within my design.' He follows this with information relating to Cooke and Edmund Prideaux, to his appointment as a Justice of the Upper Bench in Ireland, and to his betrayal, with references to Whitelocke's Memorials and the State Trials. The third page of the bifolium carries four extracts from 'Ludlow's Memoirs, small folio 1751'.
