In den WarenkorbLarge folio, 610 x 720 mm (with plica folded). Matted, framed and glazed (930 x 800 mm). Illustrated Castilian manuscript on vellum, 1 page. Folded and loosely contained within a handsome custom-made dark crimson quarter leather and cloth clamshell box with title giltstamped to spine. A fine, large manuscript document from the reign of Alfonso XI. The Royal Charter is written in Castilian vernacular with the royal names (Alfonso and that of his second wife, Maria of Portugal), opening device and King's seal painted in red, green, blue and beige (the latter occupying a large area at the centre of the document). - In the Charter, Alfonso grants the town of Escamjella (Escamilla) to Yenego Lopez de Horozco (the Alcarreño nobleman Íñigo López de Orozco, d. ca. 1355); he further commemorates the taking of Algeciras and the subjugation of Granada four years earlier, events which marked the effective end of Moorish power in Spain. - Granada's fall was brought about by the great naval victory of the Rio Salado in 1340, referred to in a separate passage. The King's admiral, Don Egidio Boccanegra, was sent with eleven galleys against the Moorish King of Granada, Yusuf Abu'l Hadchach, and Abul Hassan, Sultan of Morocco. The Spaniard defeated Yusuf's fleet of sixty ships and was rewarded with the title of Grand Admiral. The Charter present contains confirmations by Yusuf (styled Don Yucaff Abulhagege in the text) and Don Egidio, as well as leading lay and church princes and the King's own staff.…

In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: Good. FIRST EDITION thus. 4to. 2 parts in one. ff. 123, (i) 27, (i). A-P8, Q4, a-c8, d4. Roman letter. Title page in red and black, Giunta's small fleur de lys device in red on first t-p, repeated in black on recto of last leaf of first part, and on second part title, small woodcut initials, woodcut tables throughout, two large circular woodcut diagrams depicting the solar cycle, contemporary detailed marginal annotations in places, armorial bookplate "Mannington Hall" (seat of Lord Walpole) surmounted by an earl's crown with motto "Fari quae sentiat" on front paste-down. Light age yellowing, occasional light water stain, the odd mark or spot. A good copy, crisp and clean in contemporary limp vellum, pig skin ties and ball catches. An attractive copy, beautifully printed by Lucantonio Giunta, of the work which underpins Alfonso X's "lasting scientific fame" (DSB); the first edition with an additional table by the astronomer and mathematician Luca Gaurico, perhaps best known for the first published Latin translations of Archimedes' works 'De Mensura Circuli' and 'De Quadratura Parabolae'. Astrologer and mathematician, Luca Gaurico he was appointed professor of mathematics at Ferrara, in 1531 where Scaliger was one of his pupils. Gaurico may have met Copernicus at Padua, as they were both at the university in the early years of the 16th century, and would have shared a common interest in Ptolemy and Archimedes. Alfonso X ('The Wise', 1221 - 1284), was an enthusiastic sponsor of the translation of Arabic works, especially, astronomy, into Latin and Castilian. The commission of the present work was his most enduring achievement, it became known as the Tablas alfonsinas and was widely popular throughout the Middle Ages, the Spanish text from which it was translated having been lost. The tables were not widely known, however, until a Latin version was prepared in Paris in the 1320s. Copies rapidly spread throughout Europe, and for more than two centuries they were the best astronomical tables available. First printed in 1483, the Alfonsine Tables were an important source of information for the young Nicolaus Copernicus before his own work superseded them in the 1550s. A theoretical text for astronomers, the tables were used to predict the motions of the planets and stars (cf. Kenney, no. 3). By following the rules of calculation, in principle the user could derive the positions of the planets for any given time or place. Astronomical tables were also used to determine lunar phases, eclipses and calendrical information. Essentially, the work was a translation of the Toledan Tablets of the Cordoban astronomer al-Zarqali (Archazel, c. 1029 - c. 1087), with some new observations made in the years 1262-1272. It followed the general format of al-Zarqali's earlier compilation and, with only minor qualifications, retained the Ptolemaic system for explaining celestial motion. The first printed edition was Ratdolt's in Venice, in 1483, and there were nine subsequent editions (the last one in 1649). The Alphonsine Tables as they became known were a standard work of reference for astronomers, cosmographers, astrologers and navigators for nearly five hundred years. A very good unsophisticated copy. Not in BMC STC It. C16th. Brunet I, p.199. Cantamessa I p. 77. Graesse I 86. Houzeau & Lancaster 12487. Latin.…

In den WarenkorbLarge single-sheet manuscript on vellum (715 + 50 x 610 mm). 60 long lines of main text above witness-list and scribal endorsement. Penwork cadels to the upper line, significant names in red or blue capitals or reserved in blank vellum on coloured grounds, opening initial in red with penwork, Chi-Rho in red within a blue and red roundel and frame, painted royal rueda of Castile and León between the witness columns. Plica at foot pierced for twisted silken cords in blue, red, white, yellow and green, retaining pendant lead seal. A rare painted privilegio rodado of Henry II, the first Trastámara king, preserving not only the great rota painted into the document but also the original pendant lead seal and coloured silk cords. This is a grand royal charter in Old Castilian for a Don Sancho, concerning rights in Aranda de Duero, and the survival of so complete and so ceremonially finished an example in private hands is exceptional. - The "privilegio rodado" was the most solemn form of late medieval Castilian royal diploma, defined by its parchment support, pendant lead seal, and the great wheel that affirms its validity. These elements are here deployed with unusual visual force, from the Chi-Rho at the head to the monumental painted royal device placed between the witness columns. - The document belongs to the politically charged opening decade of the reign of Henry II, after he seized the throne from Pedro I. Its chancery formulae and conspicuous heraldic display turn the charter into an instrument of authority as much as of law, asserting dynastic legitimacy through colour, scale, and ceremony, probably intended to impress upon its viewer the majesty of the house of Trastámata, and draw attention away from the fratricidal origins of Henry's power (on his use of charters thus, cf. Obrado, below). Such documents were highly prized even in the Middle Ages for the refinement of their execution, and this example still conveys that intended effect with great immediacy. Composed in the milieu of the Trastámara consolidation, it embodies the close alliance of documentary practice, royal propaganda, and legal privilege in fourteenth-century Castile. - Comparable royal charters of this type survive overwhelmingly in institutional collections and only rarely occur on the market, which materially enhances the present document's scarcity as an object of collecting as well as scholarship. - Some rubbed areas of text and cockling to the vellum, without significant loss to the text apart from part of the dating year. Old folds from storage. Several early modern endorsements on the reverse. Lead seal rubbed but with main details and surrounding legend still discernible. Overall well preserved. - Cf. M. R. Obradó, "Simbología y propaganda política en los formularios cancillerescos de Enrique II de Castilla", En la España medieval 18 (1995), pp. 223 ff. …
