In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. "Published as the official Bahraini contribution to the 12th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, 2010". Unbound folded leaves 25 x 32cm including white printed wraps with cutaway corners + 108 + (4)pp including texts in English and Arabic with many colour and b/w photos, maps and plans. Very good. This was made available to attendees at the Bahrain National Pavilion. Although 35,000 copies were printed, Worldcat and Jisc record only 6 locations (British Library, University of Nova Gorica, COBISS, Centre Canadien d'Architecture, Harvard, NYU Abu Dhabi). This presents Bahrain's searching examination into the decline of its traditional sea culture, which won the Golden Lion for the best National Participation at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition. Noting that Bahrain could have selected from a range of "vast urban developments", the International Jury was impressed by the choice "of a lucid and forceful self-analysis of the nation's relationship with its rapidly changing coastline". Intended to promote debate on future planning policies, it was initiated by Culture and Information Minister Sheikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, and curated by Bahrain-based architects Noura Al-Sayeh and Fuad Al-Ansari. The Pavilion centred on 3 fishermen's huts, which had been purchased, documented and dismantled from their original sites and reconstructed in the Arsenale based on their original plans. It included a series of "Sea Interviews" directed by Bahraini movie producer and director Mohammed Rashid Bu Ali. The Bahrain Urban Research Team conducted these in April-May 2010, asking Bahrainis about their relations with the sea, how access to it has changed since the 1930s, and how things could be improved. Bahrain-based photographer Camille Zakharia's "Coastal Promenade" documented Bahrain's coastline highlighting the ecological effects of land reclamation, and ways in which they are being used. This supporting document includes essays by the Minister and Curators, and sea interviews. Historic and current maps are shown. Several of the latter highlight boundary changes, building area ratios, land and offshore springs, and irrigation. Historic and contemporary photos include aerial views, coastal scenes, and fisherman's huts, contrasted with views shown on bank notes. The are several plans of coastal huts at Seef, Muharraq, and Sanabis Port. Charts show the decline of sea culture since 1930 by placing oil price and production data alongside coastal population, Bapco employee numbers, numbers in fishing, national population, banking, land use evolution, land values, reclamation and construction permits, fish imports, boats engaged in diving etc.

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. "Wedding songs represent the richest and most important aspect of all known song arts". Original green and black illustrated wraps 17x24cm. Printed by Kazim Printing Press, Dubai. 197, (3)pp Arabic text with captioned colour and b/w photos. Wraps good, dusted. Interiors near fine with small chip to the final leaf (not affecting text), and author's presentation inscription in Arabic to the title page dated 4/6/82. This work builds on the author's MA dissertation at Cairo University in 1975. He places wedding (engagement and marriage) song at the pinnacle of folk singing, as they accompany a period of celebration at the most important time in a person's life (p37). He gathered information while visiting venues and staying with folk artists while they practiced and performed, through interviews, and a questionnaire (pp3-4). He opens with a description of folk songs and those in the Emirates (Chapters 1-2). The main section (Chapters 3-4) describes wedding songs and dances distinguishing those originating in the Gulf (Al-Ayala, Al-Ahla, Al-Sawt, Samra, Al Mawlid, Bedouin songs) and those brought in by settlers and adopted since ancient times (Dan, Haban, Nuba, and Liwa). Descriptions of each include the way they are performed, movements and steps, the number of women and men participating, musical instruments, rhythm, time and place, and texts with explanations of their meanings. The photos show the dances being performed. Scarce. Inscribed by Author(s).
