Inscrit dans le cadre des manifestations commémorant le cinquantenaire de l'année 1948, cet ouvrage vise à présenter la version palestinienne des événements qui ont abouti à la disparition d'un pays et à l'envoi de son peuple en exil. L'auteur Walid Khalidi, historien, a eu une longue carrière d'enseignant aux universités d'Oxford, Beyrouth (American University) et Harvard. Dans cet ouvrage, Walid Khalidi a fait le pari de narrer une histoire très complexe, et surtout noyée sous un nombre incalculable de clichés dans le but de rendre " moral " la conquête d'un pays, en accréditant la thèse des vainqueurs selon laquelle la Palestine aurait disparu du propre fait de ses habitants ! C'est à cette thèse prédominante depuis un demi-siècle que l'auteur s'attaque. Conçu comme un ouvrage simple, visant le large public, le livre, basé sur une documentation exhaustive, très largement inédite (il ne faut pas oublier que des documents palestiniens et arabes de première main ont très longtemps été considérés comme "douteux" et éliminés d'office), remplit la double gageure de satisfaire le "lecteur de base" et le spécialiste. Couvrant la période allant de la fin des années trente à l'épilogue de 1948, Walid Khalidi s'attache à suivre un processus de "disparition" . L'ouvrage qui s'ouvre sur deux chapitres portant sur l'évolution de l'idée du Partage de la Palestine, se prolonge ensuite par le suivi, "pas à pas", de ce qu'il en fut concrètement, avant de donner un récit détaillé de la guerre qui opposa le mouvement sioniste au peuple de la Palestine et se solda par l'expulsion de ce dernier.
