Scarce survivals from "one of the most extraordinary voyages ever undertaken. The Chinese junk Keying became the first and only Chinese junk to sail on its own bottom from China via the Cape of Good Hope into the North Atlantic. In the process, it also became the first ever Chinese-built vessel to visit both Britain and the east coast of the United States" (Davies, p. xvii) Financed by a group of Hong Kong-based investors, the voyage was captained by Charles Kellett, Chinese and British sailors together crewing the 800-ton vessel. "Its object was not science or exploration - those twin poles of non-commercial and non-belligerent nineteenth-century seafaring - but was typical Hong Kong: a business proposition aiming to make money by entertaining visitors with exhibits of the crew members in live tableaux on deck and displaying a rather eccentric collection of Chinese objects in the accommodation below. A theme park before its day" (Davies, p. xvii). The ship arrived in Britain in 1848, having previously visited New York, and spent two years there, docked at the East India Docks at Blackwall and then, for the Great Exhibition, near the Strand. Its star attraction was a Chinese man by the name of Hesing (Xisheng), about whom little is known, who posed as a distinguished fifth-rank mandarin - his claim to this elite status is highly doubtful - and received enthralled visitors, including Queen Victoria, on board. In Henry Selous's painting The Opening of the Great Exhibition by Queen Victoria on 1 May 1851 (V&A), Hesing is shown in the front row, in the company of the cream of Victorian society. Included here is an example of the Hesing portrait visitors to the Keying could buy as a souvenir. It is signed in English and Chinese with his name and that of the ship, the hand matching other traced examples and usually identified as his. Accompanying the portrait is what is likely one of the one-shilling entrance tickets for the ship's steady programme of lantern displays, juggling and acrobatics performances, and public dances. Both are stamped with the red seal of "Zeng Rui", perhaps a scholarly name Hesing chose according to literati fashion. The card has been affixed to a slightly larger card with a typed annotation "Signature of a Chinaman written on board the Chinese junk at Blackwall, June 20th, 1848". Folded. - The Keying was a three-masted Chinese trading junk that sailed from Hong Kong in December 1846 with a mixed crew of Chinese and British sailors. The vessel had been purchased surreptitiously by a conglomerate of enterprising English businessmen. It was placed under the command of Captain Kellett with the intention of carrying curiosities and merchandise to England and thereafter serving as a kind of floating museum. The Chinese crew members that they were embarking on such an extended journey were not aware of such plans. The Keying arrived in New York City on 9 July 1847, creating a sensation, with seven thousand visitors per day. - In late March 1848, the Keying arrived in London to great fanfare, and several different medals were struck to commemorate its appearance, including one that had a bust of Madarin Hesing. It was visited by the Queen Victoria (whose right to be the first European woman to visit it was reserved), the Duke of Wellington, and Charles Dickens. - It has been suggested that the Chinese Emperor was aware of the project from the start and was secretly kept informed about it, and that the mandarin served as an informer to report back in detail.…
