The present book 'A handbook of the flowering plants of Nepal' is a list of the flowering plants of Nepal. Considering the discussion held in the T" international editorial meeting of the flora of Nepal in Kathmandu in January 2017 the Department of Plant Resources planned to compile all the flowering plants reported from Nepal in three volumes as Handbooks. The plant list is based on the herbarium specimens of the flowering plants collected in Nepal although it felt very much difficult to the authors to compile all these specimens as these specimens are preserved in various institutions in Nepal, India, Japan, Europe and America and most of them could not be checked out by the authors. The present book is the first volume of the three books listing all the flowering plants occurring in Nepal. In this study, an updated checklist of the flowering plants of Nepal is presented based on the herbarium specimens collected from Nepal and given in available literature and online resources relevant to new taxa, national or regional new records, and new taxonomic papers. In the book 58 families of flowering plants reported from Nepal are presented.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Foreword. Summary in Nepali. List of photos. 1. Introduction. 2. Studies on the Flowering Plants of Nepal. 3. Flowering plant diversity of Nepal. 4. Recent activities (1993-2017) on the publication of Flora of Nepal. References. Appendices. From the foreword: The history of taxonomical studies on flora of Nepal dated back to more than 200 years. The early taxonomical studies of Nepalese plants were carried out by the Europeans mainly by the British botanists. As a result of which the first book on flora of Nepal 'Prodromus Florae Nepalensis' was prepared in 1852 by David Don. Although a few but notably important due to pioneer work of its kind on Nepalese flowering plants, taxonomical works on Nepalese plants were published from 1802 to 1947. Since 1949 many British, Japanese and Indian expeditions carried out plant explorations in Nepal and published many important findings. Many important works on Nepalese flowering plants were published between 1949 and 1982, especially three volumes of 'An Enumeration of flowering plants of Nepal' in 1978-1982 by Hara et al. Even after this publication many plant collecting expeditions in Nepal were carried out especially by the Japanese botanists. Researches carried out in the Central Department of Botany (Tribhuvan University, Nepal), University of Tokyo (Japan) and University of Edinburgh (U.K.) for M. Sc and Ph. D degrees are noteworthy. Studies on the flowering plants are still continuing and newly discovered species and new records for flora of Nepal are being added.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. From the Foreword: I am pleased to know that the department of plant resources is going to publish a book Flowering Plants Discovered from Nepal . Nepal is rich in its biological diversity including plant resources. Thousands of new plant species have been discovered from Nepal and still the collection and studies on the flowering plants are going on. Nearly 217 years of explorations carried in the past have discovered many new flowering plants in Nepal. From mid-twentieth century onwards, several botanical expeditions were carried out in Nepal by Scientists and they collected specimens of plants from different parts of the country. With the establishment of National Herbarium in Nepal under the Department of Plant Resources in 1961, significant works on the collections and publications by Nepalese botanists have been carried out. More than 100 type specimens of newly discovered plants from Nepal have been preserved in the National Herbarium at Godawari, Lalitpur, Nepal.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Province No. 1 lies in the eastern part of Nepal (26º22' to 28º7'N & 86º12' to 88º12'E). It is an important region of land in terms of biodiversity richness with unique natural beauty, forests, flora, fauna and mining and mineral resources. Its pristine habitats ranging from Kachankawal (60 m), the lowest level of Nepal to Mt. Everest (8848 m), the highest peak of the world covers almost all types of eco-regions and microclimates. Due to the variation in topography it harbors more than 60% of flowering plants found in Nepal. Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Choyu, Lotse, Jannu, Yalungkang, etc lie in this Province. This Province comprises 14 districts of eastern Nepal, namely Taplejung, Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Sankhuwasabha, Terhathum, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Sunsari, Morang, Solukhumbu, Khotang, Okhaldhunga and Udaypur (Fig. 1). It is bounded on the east by the Indian state of West Bengal and on the south by the state of Bihar of India. Similarly, Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and Province No. 2 in the Terai region to the south-west and Province No. 3 in the hilly region in the west. The total area of this Province is 25905 sq. km and the total population is 45,34,943. 3413 species and 87 infra-specific taxa (total 3500 taxa) of flowering plants have been documented in this book, which belong to 1168 genera and 184 families. Among them, 2303 are herbs, 526 shrubs, 398 trees and 273 climbers. More than 924 species are medicinal in use. Orchidaceae is the largest family having 237 species, which is followed by Poaceae (234 sp.), Asteraceae (203 sp.), Fabaceae (174 sp.), Cyperaceae (141 sp.) and so on.
