This is an account of a trw-year odyssey by an Ohio doctor to the gold mines on the Yuba and upper Sacramento rivers. The enterprise was abandoned after six months and Osbun organized an expedition to buy pigs, chickens, yams and other provisions for the San Francisco market from the natives of the Pacific Islands. This book comprises his observations on these journeys.

His two-year journal supplies an excellent account of both Gold Rush California and of the Pacific Islanders he encountered. It covers the ocean passage from New York to San Francisco, by way of Panama, mining on the upper Sacramento and Yuba rivers, and his expedition to buy pigs, chickens, yams and other produce for the San Francisco market from the natives of the Pacific Islands and his return by way of Mexico. Photo frontispiece, maps, several appendices with additional information on the places, persons and ships mentioned in the diary. Index. 233 pp. Very near fine in a very good dustjacket (price-clipped, slight loss of paper at the upper corner).

Staying with the books about maritime history, here is one that is a bit older than what you typically see. Please find: "San Francisco Bay- A Pictorial Maritime History" by John Haskell Kemble. This large hard cover book (8 ½ x 11 inches, 194 pages) was published by Bonanza Books dated 1947 (although as doubtless you know this is probably a reprint but nevertheless remarkable because it is in such good condition). The book is bound in blue papered boards with a quarter spine in light blue and dark titles and protected by a printed paper dust jacket, itself encased in a mylar sheath. This book is very nicely illustrated throughout with many vintage black-and-white photographs of the Bay and the ships that plied it. The endpapers are decorated with an outline map of San Francisco Bay. Condition: This book is in very good condition, especially for its age. The dust jacket has some very light and minor edge wear probably because the mylar sheath has protected it. The hard covers have some very small blemishes at the top of the spine but otherwise they are clean and bright and barely bumped. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages and photo plates are clean and bright throughout without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
