Large colour folding map of China, 96 x 66 cm. Few small repairs with washi at fold points and closed tear in from margin on reverse, even browning and occasional spotting but otherwise a good copy of a striking pictorial map. This map provides a colourful overview of China, decorated with images of local people farming, herding animals, mining etc., and of farm animals, wildlife and major landmarks (including the Great Wall). The image of China seems oddly rural and devoid of images of urban buildings, and - although the Japanese invasion of China was in full swing when this map was published - the only indication of military action is the fact that the city of Nanjing is decorated with a figure waving the flag of the "The Reformed Government", the short-lived pro-Japanese regime established in the region by Liang Hongzhi and others in March 1938. The map was designed by Shimada Keizo, the mid-twentieth century Japanese manga artist best known for his "Boken Dankichi" comic series. In stark contrast to this peaceful "sight-seers" depiction of China, the reverse of the map is decorated with a series of small photos and drawings illustrating "A Picture Diary of the Shining Victories of the China Incident". These depict Japan's military incursion into China from the start of the 1937 "Marco Polo Bridge Incident" to the Japanese occupation of Xuzhou in May 1938. Issued as a supplement of ????? [Sh?nen Kurabu]. Volume 25, no. 8 published in 8 June Showa 13 [1938].

Delightful large folding pictorial colour world map published as a supplement to Shonen Kurabu (?????) v. 20, no. 12. 79 x 109.5cm. A very good copy. Very good condition; map has additional light creasing from one corner having been lightly creased when map was folded. A children's map of the world, its charming quality belying the propagandistic period when it was produced. The map which was illustrated by Shimada Keizo (1900-1973), is covered with small pictographs representing the resources of countries around the world. Japanese territories and protectorates are marked in red. The general editor, whose name gave legitimacy to the publication was Sat? Yasutar? ????? (1893-1977), a professor at Tokyo University of Education. A wealth of information is given both pictorially and through brief captions. For example, the red characters below the ship sailing off the SE coast of Australia tell the viewer that lamb wool & meats are exported ? this information is repeated below the ships located at Auckland & Wellington. Wheat exports are represented by the ship off the tip of Western Australia, and the commodity is indicated by sacks of flour. Gold mining, cattle ranching can also be seen, as well as representations of platypus and wombats. Pearl divers are seen near Broome and the Coral Sea. In the Western Hemisphere, Bermuda is indicated by the British flag held aloft by a Royal Navy sailor on a boat near a caption in red saying coral reef; on the opposite side, the US fleet of battleships [???? senkan sentai] is shown by five steel-grey ships south of Baja California. The Rocky Mountains are the backdrop for the largest figures on the continent; Native Americans and African Americans. A ship shows cotton exports offshore from Galveston; flags of many countries fly over Central American nations. A young man holding a red-covered book stands behind a white towered hall over the name Boston and a caption in red reads daigaku ?? university representing many institutions rather than one in particular. An inset map of the world shows colonial possessions including Japanese territories in Micronesia.
