Softcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. First Edition. 215x138mm Erste Auflage, 719 P. Softcover. original Japanese b/w Ill. Very good condition, as new, unread, clean and tidy covers and inside.Label inside from ex owner. USADO / GEBRAUCHT / USED. Tibet+Traveling+Buddhism+Sanskrit+monasterie. In his quest to study Tibetan Buddhism and language, the Japanese Buddhist monk Kawaguchi travelled in disguise through large parts of Tibet. This expedition was made much ahead of the famous travels of Sven Hedin and other Westerners, whoes main aim was more of an explorer-traveller. In conctrast, Kawaguchi was motivated by scholastic aspirations of a researcher looking for the holy texts, Sanskrit Manusscripts and life in Monasteries. Rge exciting records of his travels are much different from the writings of the Western travellers. They describe Tiberan land from the point of view of an Asiatic intimately acquainted with the manners, customs and life of its inhabitants. Here is a spell-binding account of two thousand four hundred and ninety miles covered over a period of three years, shedding light on little known aspects of the world of snow, rivers and sand-storms as well as Tibetan Mandalas, monasteries, metropolis bodhisattavas, polity, medicine, trade, currency, soldiery, amusements and festivals etc. [Tibet+Traveling+Buddhism+Sanskrit+monasterie]. ** 10% DESCUENTO/RABATT/DISCOUNT PRIMAVERA * 88,20 (reduced from 98,00 ) **.

8vo, pp. xv, [1 (blank)], 719, [1 (blank)]; with half-title, 11 photogravure plates (1 folding), 63 illustrations in text, and 1 folding map; light foxing to title and map; very good in original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover lettered in blind; light wear to extremities, spine very slightly faded.First edition of the travel narrative of Ekai Kawaguchi, a Buddhist priest who may well have been the first Japanese citizen to visit Tibet. Kawaguchi left Japan, initially for India, in 1897. The subsequent year he spent in Darjeeling, partly in order to try and learn the Tibetan language. In 1899 he set off for Nepal, and by July 1900 he was in Tibet, where he was to spend the following two years, before returning to India in the spring of 1903. This included, in 1901, a visit to the Dalai Lama (pp. 310 ff.), who first became aware of Kawaguchi due to his reputation as an excellent doctor while in the forbidden city of Lhasa (in which Kawaguchi was forced to wear a disguise). This copy, the first and only English edition of Kawaguchi's travel narrative, is based on translations of papers which Kawaguchi first published in Japanese newspapers: the translation was facilitated by his friendship with the English theosophist and politician Annie Besant, who became president of the Theosophist Society in Madras (Chennai) in 1907. Kawaguchi's narrative combines his shock at the barbarism of many Tibetan customs particularly their lack of hygiene, both medicinal and spiritual with admiration of and close friendships with a number of Tibetan individuals. For a long time he was seen as the foremost Japanese expert on Tibetan culture. The work also contains a number of photogravures of prominent political and religious figures in India, Nepal and Tibet, as well as woodcut illustrations depicting aspects of Tibetan life and culture. Kawaguchi, a Japanese Buddhist Abbot, lived undetected for a year in Lhasa disguised as a Chinese doctor. He gives a graphic account of life in the capital. For years it was thought that he was in fact a Japanese spy, but new information now shows that there was another Japanese in Lhasa at the time and that he was the spy. Slight rubbing to extremities and faint handling wear, otherwise sound, very good indeed. Decent copy.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. First edition. First edition, with the original printed stiff paper wrappers bound in. A narrative of travels in Tibet between 1897 and 1903. Written by Ekai Kawaguchi (1866 - 1945), a Japanese Buddhist monk, the first recorded Japanese citizen to travel to Tibet. Kawaguchi is known four his journeys to Nepal (1899, 1903, 1905 & 1913), and Tibet (July 4, 1900-June 15, 1902; and 1913-1915). Tibet was officially off limits to all foreigners, but Kawaguchi managed to coss the Himalayas on an unpatrolled path, posing as a Chinese monk and taking almost 4 years to reach Lhasa. This was the first visit to Lhasa by an outsider since the 1844 visit of French missionary Evariste Huc. While there, Kawaguchi devoted himself to pilgrimage and study, mastering classical Tibetan language, and gaining an audience with the 13th Dalai Lama. Tall 8vo, xvi, 719pp, 11 plates from printed photographs (including one large folding of Mount Gaurishankara at the rear) and one folding sketch map with the author's route from Calcutta north indicated in red. Cloth. Zustand: Good +. xv, 719 p. 63 b&w in-text illustrations, 11 b&w plates (including a fold-out of Mt. Everest at rear), one fold-out map at rear. Green cloth hardcover with gold print. Spine sunned and boards a little discoloured. Top corners bumped. Ink signature and pencil notes on front free endpaper. Text very clean. Ekai Kawaguchi (1866 1945) is famous for his four journeys to Nepal and two to Tibet. He was apparently the first recorded Japanese citizen to travel in either country. The first of his journeys to Tibet, the one recorded in this volume, was from 1900 to 1902. Since Tibet was at that time closed to foreigners, Kawaguchi had to first study the Tibetan language in Nepal, then sneak into the country disguised as a Tibetan. A Buddhist monk, he was searching for original Mahayana Buddhist manuscripts. Eventually his Japanese nationality was revealed and he was forced to leave. Publication of Kawaguchi's book in English was arranged by his friend, Theosophical Society President Mrs. Annie Besant. According to the Preface (p. vii), Mrs. Besant believed books by Western authors portrayed Tibet from their own Western point of view, while Kawaguchi's tale would present an Asian view of Tibet to the world. Kawaguchi's tale remains an excellent adventure tale, allowing the reader to imagine what it's like to travel to a totally foreign and forbidding country - with no safety net.
