Heinrich der Jüngere war zwar der Zweitgeborene, aber älteste Sohn Heinrichs II., da sein Bruder Wilhelm bereits im Kindesalter verstarb. Er wurde noch zu Leb- und Regierungszeit seines Vaters zu dessen Nachfolger und Statthalter in England ernannt.Es stellt sich daher die Frage, ob der Wille Heinrichs darin begründet lag, seiner Herrschaft durch die Primogenitur Beständigkeit zu geben.Die Aktualität dieses Themas zeigt sich unter anderem an dem bis heute nicht abgerissenen Kult um einen weiteren Sohn Heinrichs II., Richard Löwenherz. Erst kürzlich widmete das Historische Museum der Pfalz zu Speyer diesem eine ganze Ausstellung. Abseits des populären Mythos um Richard Löwenherz besteht auch heute noch Interesse an den Taten der angevinischen Könige Englands. Für den angelsächsischen Sprachraum ergibt sich dies aus dem Bezug zur eigenen Geschichte, jedoch greifen auch deutschsprachige Historiker dieses Thema auf, da die internationalen Beziehungen Heinrichs II. weit über das anglonormannisch-französische Gebiet hinausgingen. So veröffentlichte Matthew Strickland 2016 eine ausführliche Monographie, die sich mit dem Mitkönig beschäftigt.In der Forschung der letzten Jahre kristallisierten sich zwei Theorien heraus, den Konflikt zwischen Heinrich II. und seinen Söhnen sowie den französischen Königen Ludwig VII. und Philipp II. zu betrachten.
