Hardcover. Zustand: Good. George Cruikshank (illustrator). The book belonging to the journalist Wilfrid Hugh Chesson ( W. H. Chesson ) who is best known for his biography of George Cruikshank. He had the Tom Thumb book bound with its original printed covers bound into this blue cloth binding in 1903, bound with extra blank pages at the rear which he has used to paste in clippings of newspaper book reviews he had written for The Daily Chronicle Newspaper and other newspapers, including reviews of books by H. G. Wells, Jerome K. Jerome, etc, and a review of a new book about Henry Fielding mentioning George Cruikshank. The Tom Thumb book runs to 34 pages bound in its original printed wrappers as mentioned, this is followed by 36 pages of newspaper cuttings of articles written by W. H. Chesson. The cloth covers have some rubbing wear and darkening, internally some handling marks to the Tom Thumb book, covers grubby. The tom Thumb book has noted misnumbering to the pages but is complete. The pages with the newspapers articles are heavily browned else in good general condition. AN INTERESTING ASSOCIATION COPY BELONGING TO A BIOGRAPHER OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK.

Author Joseph Reed was a friend of Tom Jones author Henry Fielding, and Fielding encouraged him to write a comic opera based on his novel; he then praised Reed's version publicly. 2) The Recruiting Officer: 83, [6] p. 1768. A 1706 play by the Irish writer George Farquhar which follows the exploits of two officers named Plume and Brazen in the town of Shrewsbury. 3) The Imposters: 72 p. 1789. Featured Mrs. Jordan when performed at Drury Lane. This section's pages are darkened. 4) The Romance of an Hour: 40 p. 1775. A stage success for political writer Hugh Kelly. 5) Midas: 59 p. 1770. Midas, by Kane O'Hara, is a "burletta" or mock opera, performed over 200 times at Covent Garden. 17 cm. Full leather. Remains of small label lower spine, boards rubbed, corners worn. The first edition, to which the earlier, incomplete pagination in the present copy refers, has 67 pages; the second is a compilation of excerpts from the first and has 39 pages only. Page [25] of the second edition was re-engraved as in the first edition it contained the beginning of another number, excluded from the second edition, at its foot. "Irish librettist and musician [Kane O'Hara]. is known chiefly as the librettist and arranger of the music for Midas. the first 'English burletta', presented at the Crow Street Theatre, Dublin, on 22 January 1762 as a rival attraction to the season of Italian burlettas at the Smock Alley Theatre. The music contains popular songs of the time, such as arias from Italian operas and folksongs from Ireland and other countries, linked by dialogue set to recitative. There is frequent resort to concerted numbers. With characters consisting of mythological gods and mortals, Midas is in reality a burlesque of opera seria.
