Since its modern reappearance in the academic community in the early 1990s, great progress has been made in understanding both the capabilities and the weaknesses of digital watermarking. On the theoretical side, we all are now well aware of the fact that digital watermarking is best viewed as a form of communication using side information. In the case of digital watermarking the side information in question is the document to be watermarked. This insight has led to a better understanding of the limits of the capacity and robustness of digital watermarking algorithms. It has also led to new and improved watermarking algorithms, both in terms of capacity and imperceptibility. Similarly, the role of human perception, and models thereof, has been greatly enhanced in the study and design of digital watermarking algorithms and systems. On the practical side, applications of watermarking are not yet abundant. The original euphoria on the role of digital watermarking in copy protection and copyright protection has not resulted in widespread use in practical systems. With hindsight, a number of reasons can be given for this lack of practical applications.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - A recommendation to hold a symposium on contact problems in mechanics, sponsored by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), was made by the Engineering Mechanics Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Delft University of Technology. In order to outline the scope of the Symposium and select the place and date IUTAM appointed a Study-group of seven members in 1971. Following an interchange of views between these members the Study-group proposed to IUTAM to organise an International Symposium on the Mechanics of the Contact between Deformable Bodies on August 20-23, 1974, at Twente University of Technology, Netherlands, with a number of participants restricted to about 60, the outline of scope being as follows: Theoretical and fundamental experimental studies on the mechanical aspects of the contact between solid bodies: solid surfaces, area of contact, mechanics of friction in the broadest sense. Mathematical analysis of the normal contact and tangential contact (pure sliding, steady and unsteady rolling) between two (elastically, plastically and viscoelastically) deformable solid bodies on the basis of simplified models of the contact mechanism. Problems involving hydrodynamic lubrication as the main phenomenon should be excluded. IUTAM accepted this proposal and appointed in December, 1972, a scientific committee consisting of the following members: N. H. Arutjunjan (USSR), H. Buffer (BRD), L. E. Goodman (USA), A. Ju. ISIinskij (USSR), K. L. Johnson (UK), W. Nowacki (Poland), A. D. de Pater (Chairman, Netherlands) and D. Tabor (UK). Their main duty was the selection of lecturers and other participants.

The title of that conference was 'Residual Stresses in Rails - Effects on Rail Integrity and Railroad Economics' and its themes were the measurement and prediction of residual stresses in rails, but, as the sub-title suggests, the intention was also to provide a link between research and its application to the practical railway world. At the Cracow conference there were 40 participants with 5 railways and 5 rail makers being represented and 25 papers were given. The Cracow conference was a success, and by March 1991 its off-spring, 'The International Conference on Rail Quality and Maintenance for Modern Railway Operations', was conceived and birth was ultimately given in June 1992 at the Technical University, Delft. It turned out to be some baby, with 112 delegates from 24 countries taking part! As with its predecessor, the conference was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between research investigators, rail makers and railway engineers. A cursory examination of the list of participants suggests that about 57% were from the railway industry, 34% from universities and other research institutions and 9% from the steel industry. Bearing in mind that some of the railway industry participants were from their respective research and development organisations the balance of interests was about right.
