Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: 1. Preface. 2. Abbreviations. 3. Wetland: an overview. 4. Introduction to Indian Ramsar Wetlands. 5. Faunal Groups. 6. Threatened Fauna (Vertebrates). 7. References. From the preface: Wetlands are ecologically as well as economically important systems which harbour rich natural resources and play a crucial role in various hydrological cycle. carbon sequestration, and global greenhouse gas emission. As defined by Ramsar convention 1971, Wetlands are area of marsh, fen, peat-land or water. whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water, the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six meter The wetlands act as buffers for terrestrial run-off and thus prevent eutrophication of inlands and coastal waters. Further, it not only acts as a reservoir of biodiversity but also triggers the mass movement of living creature, e., refuge for migratory birds. The system often creates an oxic- anoxic condition which facilitates simultaneous activity of both aerobic and anaerobic life forms, e.g., microbes, larvae of insects, and fishes. However, due to anthropogenic activity and climate change the wetlands are under high pressure not only in India but globally and our understanding of the various life forms it harbours, remains far from complete. Even the wetlands in biodiversity hotspots of India are under stress and thus strive to conserve itself and the associated diversity. The Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. As of now there are 171 Contracting Parties on the convention on wetlands. The total number of wetlands of international importance around the world is 2,414 covering and area of 254,543,972 ha. Since India became a contracting party to the Ramsar convention in 1981 a total of 42 Ramsar sites spread over an area of 11,528.574 sq. km ha have been identified thus far.

Methodology for collection, preservation and identification. 4. Species account. 5. Species composition and overall diversity of Scarab Beetles from North-East. 6. Checklist of Scarab Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) from North-East Biogeographic Zone. References. Plates. In this book, the fauna of the Scarab Beetles of the North-East Biogeographic Zone has been comprehensively reviewed based on published literature and materials studies form 6 states, I.e. Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. A total of 587 species belonging to 121 genera under six subfamilies have been documented in this document. Melolonthinae is the dominant subfamily (180 species), followed by Scarabaeinae (172 species), Rutelinae (128 species), Cetoniinae (75 species), Dynastinae (20 species) and Aphodiinae (12 species). The distribution of the scarab beetles in states has been provided, with Meghalaya representing the maximum number of 372 species, followed by Assam (253), Manipur (99), Nagaland (68), Tripura (53) and Mizoram (43). Regarding the distribution in biotic provinces, 457 species are reported from North-East Hills and 251 from Brahmaputra Valley. The photographs of the habitus and external male genitalia of the studies 135 species are also provided with diagnostic characters and distribution of species. Twenty-seven species are reported as new records in the North-east Zone to report the extension of known geographic ranges. The illustrations of the external male genitalia of 29 species and habitus of 31 species are provided for the first time. The book aims to propagate knowledge to promote future research activities in scarab beetle taxonomy and its conservation.
