In den WarenkorbExhibition catalogue. First paperback edition. 280x230mm 208 pages.Illustrated in duotone, some colour. Paperback. Fine. This elegantly designed, fully illustrated volume presents exquisite drawings by Spanish artists over the course of two centuries, featuring works by Ribera, Murillo and Goya from public and private collections in the New York area. Published to accompany a major exhibition at The Frick Collection in New York, this book presents the character, range and depth of the Spanish tradition of drawing from the early 17th to the early 19th century. These extraordinary works share a distinctiveness of technique, subject and mood that sets them apart from Italianate examples produced on the Peninsula in the same period - in other words, they represent a specifically 'Spanish manner'. Although Italian Renaissance principles of figure drawing and perspective were practiced by Spanish draftsmen, the greatest of them also employed techniques of dazzling idiosyncrasy: lines dart and dash freely over the paper as if the hand of the artist could not be restrained, and energetic splotches of ink wash enrich forms. Many of the themes favoured by these artists - fantastic creatures, murderers and martyrdoms, and unusual treatmants of the human body - also distinguish these works. Jusepe de Ribera (illustrator). Man with beard holds a skullMade by Charles Jacque after Jusepe de Ribera.Medium: Etching on wove (vellin) paper.Sheet size: 12.5 x 13.2 cm (4.92 x 5.2 inch). Image size: 11.2 x 11.9 cm. (4.41 x 4.69 inch).MAN-BEARD-SKULL | PCO-C44-32BACKGROUND INFORMATIONSource: unknown, to be determined.Biography engraver: Charles-Émile Jacque (1813-1894) was a French painter of Pastoralism and engraver who was, with Jean-François Millet, part of the Barbizon School. He first learned to engrave maps when he spent seven years in the French Army.Biography artist: Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) was a Spanish painter and printmaker. Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and the singular Diego Velázquez, are regarded as the major artists of Spanish Baroque painting. Referring to a series of Ribera exhibitions held in the late 20th century, Philippe de Montebello wrote "If Ribera's status as the undisputed protagonist of Neapolitan painting had ever been in doubt, it was no longer. Indeed, to many it seemed that Ribera emerged from these exhibitions as not simply the greatest Neapolitan artist of his age but one of the outstanding European masters of the seventeenth century." Jusepe de Ribera has also been referred to as José de Ribera, Josep de Ribera, and Lo Spagnoletto ("the Little Spaniard") by his contemporaries, early historians, and biographers. Condition: good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

This series of prints document the collection of Jean-Baptiste Boyer d'Eguilles, the engraving of which was started by Sebastien Barras (1653-1703) and Boyer himself, who was also an amateur engraver. Jean-Baptiste Boyer, Marquis d'Eguilles (1650-1709) was a French aristocrat, lawyer and engraver. Jacobus Coelemans or Jacob Coelemans, known in France as Jacques Coelemans (Antwerp, 1654-Aix-en-Provence, 1732) was a Flemish engraver and printmaker, known for his reproductive prints after famous painters and portraits. He trained in his native Antwerp and moved to Aix-en-Provence in France in 1690 where he worked for the remainder of his life. He was a pupil of Frederik Bouttats the younger. In Aix he was hired by Jean-Baptiste Boyer d'Aguilles, his patron, Attorney General of the Provence and famous art collector to engrave his entire collection. His work is recognized for its brilliance, good understanding of chiaroscuro and accuracy.
