Hardcover. Zustand: Like New. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Book in excellent unread/unused condition. Hardcover. English. Pub Year 2005, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> Poland in Old Photographs by Tomasz Jurasz presents a visual narrative chronicling Poland's complex history through photography, particularly from the second half of the 19th century. This album showcases how photography, particularly daguerreotype and portrait styles, began to play a significant role in recording Poland's past, bridging over eight centuries of independence with the struggles endured during its various partitions. Initially, photography mimicked the artistry of painting, especially in portraiture, where subjects posed similarly to painted representations. Over time, photographs evolved, capturing more candid and detailed reflections of life, despite retaining a formal presentation in attire and demeanour. The book also examines the cultural persistence of Polish identity throughout the partitions, uniting the shared historical aspirations for independence. In particular, the tradition of Sarmatism, representing a fusion of Eastern cultural influences and the ideals of Polish nobility, is highlighted as a key aspect of Polish heritage. The narrative frames Sarmatism not only as a gentry concept but as a defining trait of all Poles, depicting a rich cultural heritage that thrived even amid adversity. Moreover, Jurasz illustrates the inclusive nature of Polish culture, characterised by its co-existence with various nationalities and faiths. This cultural openness contributed to Poland's appeal, allowing it to attract outsiders fascinated by its vibrancy. The romantic ideals of independence and collective resilience in the face of oppression resonate throughout this visual study, enhancing the understanding of Poland's historical and cultural landscape during challenging times. The book serves as a poignant exploration of how photography captures and commemorates the essence of a nation.…
