(B&W/color photographs) Catalog for one of the most high-profile dead-celebrity auctions of recent times. Preceded and promoted by three exhibitions -- one in Ireland, one abroad the Queen Mary 2, the final one at the auction site -- the sale was held in four sessions over the course of two days, and featured the usual stuff of such events: tons and tons of clothing, numerous personal effects (books, glassware, furniture, silverware, artwork, toiletry items, kitchen appliances, linens, her passports, tchotckes of all sorts, etc.), and the occasional item that borders on the absurd: for instance, "Metal Four Drawer File Cabinet; with locking mechanism and original key." (Original key, mind you! I wonder if it achieved the $50-$100 presale estimate?) There is a fair amount of memorabilia related to her movie career sprinkled throughout the sale (much of it photographic), although for many such items the fine print reveals that the item or items in question were "acquired by a family member and not owned personally by Greta Garbo." (The family member or members in question seem to have been two of GG's great-nephews, one of whom reminisces about her in an introductory page.) Although such events never fully steer clear of the picking-over-the-dead-celebrity's-personal-stuff vibe (which given Garbo's legendary wish to be "left alone," must have had her doing at least a couple of rotations in her grave), as these things go this is quite a tastefully-done catalog, and gives one a pretty good sense of Garbo as a private individual as well as a cinema icon. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. (color and B&W photographs) Lavishly-produced auction catalog, offering 588 lots of nearly every sort of thing that your average long-divorced wife of an iconic celebrity might have hanging around her very well-appointed home: furniture, clothing, artwork, jewelry, silverware, pottery, purses, shoes, etc. etc. -- even a few things that actually belonged to the celebrity in question (including some of his books). What must it be like, I wonder, to go on being known as "Mrs. So-and-So," when you've been divorced from Mr. So-and-So for decades? (In Nancy's case, since 1951.) But to give her and Frank their due, by all reports they remained close for the rest of their lives, through all Frank's many romances, affairs and marriages; Nancy herself never remarried, and outlived Frank by twenty years -- and from the evidence of this catalog alone, she never had to suffer any economic deprivation.
