However the explosion in our understanding of mammalian genome and accompanying technological innovations has opened up new avenues in farm animal genetic research. Advances in molecular genetics during the last two decades have been phenomenal and the researchers are more inclined to use genomic tools to solve their research questions. Molecular markers especially DNA markers that are capable of revealing genetic variations at DNA level are now key players in animal genetic research programs. Various DNA markets like restricted fragment length polymorphism RFLP short tandem repeats micro satellites single nucleotide polymorphisms SNP etc. and DNA sequencing methods are increasingly used by researchers not only for marker based genetic improvement programs but also in conservation genetics to analyze the diversity and relationship of livestock populations. However there are only limited literatures that deal with the ways and means of analyzing genetic markers with special emphasis on farm animals.
