El Dr. Lal Mani Joshi pone al descubierto, con argumentos de peso, las inexactitudes tanto de los defensores de la philosophia perennis, como las de los académicos hindúes como Rdhakrishnan. Además, este volumen incluye Aspectos del budismo en la historia india , una conferencia que Lal Mani Joshi pronunció en Colombo, Sri Lanka, en homenaje a Sir Baron Jayatilleke. En ella abordó, de una manera sucinta pero detallada, la enorme contribución que la tradición budista hizo a la antigua civilización india. Haciendo gala de una gran erudición, el autor demuestra que el arte, la literatura, la ética y la filosofía indias no hubieran sido lo mismo sin la tradición budista. Lal Mani Joshi (1935-1984) nació el 27 de julio de 1935 a los pies del Himalaya, en las colinas Kumaon, en Uttar Pradesh. Fue uno de los eruditos budistas más eminentes del siglo XX. Nacido en el seno de una familia tradicional de brahmanes de la zona del norte de la India donde también recibió su educación superior, se convirtió en uno de los primeros académicos indios en abordar la historia de la tradiciones religiosas indias desde una perspectiva no sectaria y no brahmánica. De 1956 a 1958 estudió en la universidad de Allahabad, donde se graduó en historia, filosofía y literatura inglesa. De 1958 a 1960 estudió budismo e historia de la India con Govind Chandra Pande, hasta el día de hoy uno de los cerebros más destacados de la India moderna. Posteriormente, Joshi completó sus estudios en sánscrito clásico y sánscrito budista, y también finalizó un curso en lengua clásica tibetana. De 1969 a 1970 fue profesor visitante de Religión Comparada en el Center for the Study of World Religions, Harvard University, EE. UU. Los últimos años de su vida, L. M. Joshi los pasó en EE. UU. (de 1981 a la primavera de 1984), primero como Henry R. Luce Visiting Professor de Éticas Religiosas Comparadas en el Amherst College, Massachussetts, y posteriormente como Margaret Gest Visiting Professor de Religión Comparada en el Haverford College, Pennsylvania. Su magnífica obra Studies on the Budhistic Culture of India (Delhi, Motilal Banarsidass, 1977) ha marcado un antes y un después en el estudio académico indio sobre el budismo.
